Plus/minus: WBB vs Stanford

While lopsided games usually make for dreadful plus/minus charts; thoughts about the Pac-10 tournament leaving San Jose, who Cal will happy to see in the rear view mirror, and the one media member who can keep grown men from acting like adults.

Bidding San Jose adieu

Monday's final marked the last time that the women's Pac-10 tournament will be played in San Jose in the foreseeable future.  Starting next year, it will be played in Staples Center in Los Angeles.  While having the women's tournament located in the same venue and just a few days prior to the men's tournament will save Fox the trouble of having to lug their equipment up and down the state, one has to wonder how well the Cal-Stanford final would have drawn in the L.A. market.  For the past few years, the attendance at the Pac-10 tourney has been boosted by a big Stanford contingent that's able to make the short drive.  With Cal's recent resurgence, their cheering section is starting to grow but is still a long way from matching that of their cross-bay rivals.

With a strong recruiting class from UCLA, and USC expecting a couple of players back from injury, the potential for both teams to make a run deep into the Pac-10 tourney is certainly there, which could help the economics of the tournament.  But also keep in mind, that UCLA's average home attendance was 1,675, while USC's was a Pac-10 low 1,316 fans. Their combined attendance is less than Stanford's average home attendance of 3,797.

Although the championship game attendance of 4,521 might be considered disappointing in light of the 10,525 that attended the Cal-Stanford game at Haas Pavilion recently and the 6,175 that attended the game at Maples, much of that had to do with the scheduling.   While the Monday night time slot might have been more appealing from a TV standpoint than getting caught up in the glut of Sunday programming, women's basketball games, especially at Cal, have been heavily promoted towards families and kids.   Fighting traffic into San Jose on a weeknight, especially if one has to come out of Oakland or San Francisco, holds a little appeal to people, aside from the diehards. But for many people the decision to stay home is easy when faced with driving kids down and driving back up afterwards and putting them to sleep late on a school night, especially on the Monday after the time change when everybody's internal clock is a little out of kilter.

Wordless courtesies

Because the Pac-10 tourney is held in HP Pavilion, there are a lot of people that you see that you don't normally see if you're used to covering games at a particular venue.   You'll see more people from the Pac-10 office, you'll see athletic directors,   and the unforgettable people in the purple blazers, who would keep stopping you to check your media pass even if you've just walked past them for the fifth time in a half hour.

As everybody's running back and forth to head to the interview room, fetch a press release, or get a beverage, you pass people who you're not that you've met before, but blurt out a quick hello or give a nod of your head while heading to your intended destination.

And sometimes, as you're walking, you're headed towards a narrow corridor and you see someone approaching carrying a shoulder bag, a stack of papers and a beverage cup. So you step to the side to let them pass.

And you smile at them.

And that person smiles back.

Thanks, Lindsay.

Good-bye, good luck, and go away

As Cal's women's basketball team has soared up the national rankings and drawn the attention of people who don't regularly watch women's basketball, those people are inclined to watch the bigger games to see what all the fuss is about.  A game featuring two nationally top-10 teams with Pac-10 title hopes? Gotta see that.   Playing for the Pac-10 tournament championship?  Time to check in.

With both games against Stanford and both games resulting in losses, there's bound to be uncertainty about how good Cal really is and how good Stanford really is. For the Bears, a 15-3 conference record is nothing to sneeze at and a 26-6 record is a major achievement. Yet one could argue that none of the other Pac-10 teams is ranked in the top 25, so it's hard to tell what those three wins against third-place Arizona State really mean.  With the exception of the Washington loss, the rest of the Bears defeats have been to top 10 teams Rutgers, Baylor, and Stanford.  So let's say that we'll get a better idea of how good Cal is after the first week of the NCAA tourney.

For many people, all they have to measure Cal against is Stanford.  This year, Stanford's beaten then-#1 Tennessee, then-#3 Rutgers, then-#10 Baylor, current #10 Cal three times, and has suffered its only loss to #1 Connecticut.  Their baffling set of losses at UCLA and USC are the only things possibly separating them from a possible #1 seed and a possible #2 national ranking.  This isn't just another one of Tara Vanderveer's good teams, it's a terrific team by Stanford's standards.

Stanford's X-factor is Candice Wiggins.  An excellent case can be made for her as being the greatest player in Pac-10 history. Three-time player of the year, all-time conference scoring leader, and four Pac-10 titles, three Pac-10 tourney championships, three-time Pac-10 tourney MVP, and a four-time All-American. Although some people could make a case for Lisa Leslie, Natalie Williams, or even one of Stanford's trio of Val Whiting, Kate Starbird, and Nicole Powell; none of them has had nearly the run that Wiggins has.

One could look at Cal and say that all they need to do is recruit someone like Wiggins, but understand that players like Wiggins are extremely rare.  Her ability to be disruptive on defense, her speed in the open court and her ballhandling skills are enough, but when her outside shot falls like it did on Monday when she made five three-point shots; she's like one of those players in the old NBA Jam video game who would catch fire.   You could go through several classes of five-star recruits and not find a player as gifted as Wiggins.

But after four years of giving Cal the business, her eligibility finally runs out this year and she'll be off to the WNBA to pick on a whole new group of people.  While any fan of basketball will have been grateful for the chance to watch her play, Cal fans will hope, barring an act of sadism from the NCAA Selection Committee, that they've seen the last of her.

More of us than you think

Now some of you are probably are still wondering about the entry two items ago. How puerile can thing get when someone in the media can be rendered goofy by a simple smile.

A highly-regarded member of the Bay Area sportswriting fraternity was working on a story when he looked up at the monitor and saw our good friend, Ms. Soto. Now keep in mind, he's looking at her image on TV.

He freezes.

"It's Lindsay Soto," he tells the reporter next to him.

"So?"

"It's Lindsay Soto," he repeats, because the reporter next to him isn't aware that he's missing out on an apparent major life moment.

He then asks his fellow reporter next to him, "Call [another esteemed member of the Bay Area sportswriting fraternity] and tell him I just saw Lindsay Soto. I guarantee you'll get a call in five minutes."

The other reporter didn't appear too impressed.

"C'mon, call him. I guarantee you. Five minutes."

Valor being the better part of discretion, the call was not made.

(Disclaimer: in all of the sentences describing the above item, of all the things that could considered a subject, a pronoun, an object, an indirect object or whatever, none of them refer to me. I was simply an observer and not a participant.)

OK, it's on to the plus/minus.

Plus/minus:  Stanford 56, California 35

There's not a lot of useful knowledge that can be gleaned from the Stanford plus/minus.   Every combination that Cal tried in the first half had difficulty against Stanford, and in the second half, the deficit surpassed 30 before the Cardinal eased up and let their reserves get playing time. After taking a 50-19 lead with 10:33 left, Stanford scored just six points the rest of the way.  Cal's players with the better plus/minus numbers were the players who entered the game well after the outcome had been decided and players who generally played less minutes.

With the Golden Bear offense struggling, the only player they could have counted on for off-the-bench scoring punch was Kelsey Adrian, who gave it her best shot, but finished the game 2-of-9 from three-point territory.  The 30 minutes that she played was the most she's played in several months, but was understandable considering that the team's done well against Stanford when she's playing. In 80 minutes against Stanford, the Bears are a -21 (99-120) with her in the game, and a -22 (46-68) during the 40 minutes that she's out.   By comparison, Lauren Greif seems to have a tough time against the Cardinal, as her 79 minutes on court have resulted in a -51 (96-147), while her 41 minutes off the court have resulted in a +8 (49-41).

Once again, Stanford forced the Bears to beat them with their outside shooting, and Cal couldn't do it.  Greif barely missed a couple of three-point shots early on and Adrian kept shooting throughout out the game, but the Bears were never able to sustain a strong enough run to even get within Stanford's shadow.  One might be inclined to think that the rest of the Pac-10 will try to defend Cal like Stanford did.  Yet the talent pool of athletic, skilled, tall big people in women's basketball is small enough, there aren't going to be a lot of teams that will be able to match up with either Hampton or Walker, much less try to double team them.  Hampton and Walker are likely to be quicker than most players they'll face.  But come the end of next season rolls around, when the second Stanford game and as the Pac-10 tournament approach, the Bears'll either have to be considerably better outside shooters, or come up with some new creative wrinkles - which admittedly are hard to trot out when facing a team for the third time - to move their play to another level.
