Last second basket ends Cal's season

With a 53-49 lead over George Washington and having its second-best free throw shooter going to the line, Cal's women's basketball team was just 122 seconds away from earning a spot in Sweet Sixteen of NCAA women's basketball tournament. But a couple of missed shots, a controversial travelling call and a last-second putback and the Bears ended up liking Mondays about as much as Bob Geldof did.

For California (27-7), its 55-53 loss to George Washington (27-6) marked its second Monday loss in three weeks, with the other defeat coming to Stanford in the finals of the Pac-10 Tournament two weeks ago.

Ashley Walker led Cal with 19 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists, while Alexis Gray-Lawson added 14 points and 9 rebounds. Antelia Parish led the Colonials with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Lawrence add 13 points go with four rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

While George Washington held the Bears scoreless for the final 3:19 while coming back from a six-point deficit, the biggest question afterwards had to do with the time out that wasn't. Or was.

After Lawrence drove the length of the court to tie the game following a missed shot by Natasha Vital, the Bears called a 30 second timeout.  Following the timeout, the Bears inbounded the ball to Vital who dribbled the ball upcourt and attempted to call time out in front of the Cal bench.  As Vital signaled timeout with the Cal bench also calling the timeout, referee Amy Bonner stunningly called travelling.

"I looked at the monitor," said head coach Joanne Boyle, who said that both the bench and Vital were attempting to call timeout. "We checked it four times and she didn't travel. The ref called travel."

Upon repeated views of the replay, assistant coach Kevin Morrison can be seen coming off of the bench attempting to signal time out.  Vital dribbled across the halfcourt stripe, came to a stop, and appeared to drag her back foot. Yet what couldn't be determined from the replay is when she called timeout. It's not necessary for a player to make a physical signal for the referee to issue a timeout.

George Washington head coach Joe McKeown had a slightly different point of view.

"I had a pretty good look from the sideline," said McKeown. "It looked like she dribbled into a trap and she was trying to get to the sideline and I don't think she expected us to come and trap her. It looked to me to be a pretty good call. I think Sarah-Jo and Kim (Beck) caught her a little off guard with the trap."

Following the timeout, George Washington guard Kimberly Beck dribbled down the right side of the court and fired up an airball which was rebounded by Lawrence on the weak side. With Walker attempting to swat the ball away, Lawrence's follow-up shot dropped through the basket.  As the Colonial team burst on to the floor, with Walker laying on the court, the only question was whether Lawrence released her shot in time. A quick video review showed that the ball left her hands in plenty of time, and the Bears season came to a bitter, frustrating end.

Cal finishes the season with a 27-7 record, the most wins by a Cal team, a second place finish in the Pac-10, a runner-up finish in the Pac-10 tourney, won their first NCAA tourney game since 1993, and played in front of a Pac-10 record crowd of 10,525 at Haas Pavilion. While it's another big step forward for the team and the program, the Bears will be frustrated by knowing that they were extremely close to making this an even greater season, narrowly missing tying for the Pac-10 championship and coming just short of their goal of reaching the Sweet Sixteen.

But even in the immediate aftermath of a disappointing loss, Boyle already began the wrenching process of helping the team put the game and the season into perspective.

"I told them how proud I was and that things happen for a reason and I don't know why the outcome is the way it is," said Boyle. "It's sad for Krista Foster because its her last game with us. This doesn't define our season. We've changed Cal basketball in a very short period of time, and gotten a community involved. There's been a lot of great things that have happened for us this year. As hard as it is to hear it right now because it just hurts a lot is that this game doesn't define our season. But that's hard to comprehend right now."

She shared some thoughts about how the team has evolved during the season.

"We've grown into being a tough team, physically and mentally," said Boyle. "Our balance was a lot better coming down the stretch, and our defense and rebounding really came along."

Aside from the controversial call, one of the more frustrating aspects of this game will be that the Bears let a late lead slip away.  Even though the Bears didn't have a player other than Walker score a field goal in the second half until Kelsey Adrian made a three-point basket with 8:44 left, Cal still held on to a 43-38 lead.

George Washington's heralded blizzard defense caused the Bears all kinds of trouble, harassing the Bears into 7 of 27 shooting (25.9%) in the second half.

"It's a great defense," said Boyle. "They get in the passing lanes and get touches on the balls.  You have to knock down shots against it. I felt like we did that more so in the first half. Then we tried to get it under the basket in the second half and sometimes we got fouled and went to the free throw line."

For their part, the Colonials weren't going to fade easily. They came into Monday's game having won 21 of their past 25 games.  Their top wins during that time a 66-65 overtime win over then #10 Texas A&M and then #18 Auburn 68-66. More interestingly, their four losses were by one (UNLV), two (Auburn), three (St. Bonaventure), and four (Xavier) points.

With both Hampton and Walker having picked up their third fouls early in the second half, George Washington made concerted efforts to go directly at the pair, at one point attacking Walker on four out of five possessions, yet coming way with no points.

When Gray-Lawson made a three-point shot to put the Bears up 48-42 with 5:58 left, it appeared that Cal bought itself a little breathing room.  Yet the Bears big players were starting to tire. While some of their aggressiveness was muted because neither of them wanted to get into additional foul trouble, the Colonials were beginning to have an easier time of it on the offensive and defensive boards.

"We were trying to go zone off of missed shots which we usually don't do," said Boyle. "We also tried to press to take some time off the block and burn minutes here and there."

Cal was up 53-49 with 2:02 when Gray-Lawson was fouled by Lawrence.  A 68.1% shooter coming into the game, she missed the front end of the one-and-one. On the other end of the floor Adair, who finished with 11 points and 8 rebounds, drew Hampton's fourth foul and made two free throws closing the gap to two, at 53-51.

Hampton missed a jumper from the key, which was rebounded by Whitney Allen.   George Washington attempted to work the ball into Adair, but Gray-Lawson dropped down on her, forcing her to kick the ball outside, and the Colonials were called for a shot-clock violation with 47 seconds left.

The Colonials trapped the Bears coming up the court, but while Cal managed to preserve possession, by the time they were able to get into their offense, Vital fired up a long jump shot that was far short of its target. Antelia Parrish, who led George Washington with 15 points and 10 rebounds fired an outlet pass to Lawrence who raced through the Cal defense with surprising ease to tie the score at 53.

"We have experience with close games at the end," said Lawrence. "We just want to attack in those situations when their defense isn't set. So when I got the ball I knew I was going to attack. I got to the rim and luckily no one was there."

Following the basket, Cal called a 30 second timeout and then inbounded the ball to Vital who dribbled the ball upcourt before being called for the questionable travel.

The game started brightly for the Bears as it seemed that they were putting together one of those games where the defense, the outside shooting, and combination of Hampton and Walker were all on song.  Although the Colonials were paying extra attention to the Bears' dynamic duo, Hampton and Walker have developed enough faith in their backcourt that they don't feel the need to force shots when being well-guarded. All season long, teams have been daring the Bears to beat them from the outside.  Early on, George Washington attempted to have guards cheat in  Hampton, leaving shooters open.   Vital, Gray-Lawson, and Greif connected on the Bears' first four three-point shots, pushing them to a 15-7 lead.

With 11:05 left in the first half, Jessica Adair, George Washington's 6-4 center picked up her second foul, with the Bears up 15-12.  Although she scored just three points up until that point, she was the focus of the Colonial offense.  Adair is surprisingly graceful for a player of her size, and her post moves caused Auburn all sorts of problems in the second half of last Saturday's game.  George Washington uses the defensive attention on her to free up outside shooters and create lanes for cutters underneath.   While they had other big bodies they could use in her place, none of them posed   remotely identical offensive threat.

Consider that in the first half, George Washington shot 35.7% (5 of 14) from the field up until Adair picked up her second foul.  During the final 11:05, George Washington's shooting percentage sank even lower - to 20% on 4 of 20 shooting, with three of those coming on three pointers and one coming off a follow of a missed shot.

Even with Adair out, George Washington did a terrific job of guarding Hampton, limiting her to just 2-of-8 shooting and four points, with just two of them coming in the second half.

"They double and triple teamed me but I knew just to kick it back to my guards and they hit their shots," said an emotional Hampton afterwards, who also had nine rebounds and six turnovers. "That's all you can ask from your guards. There was nothing unexpected. I would have been surprised if they didn't double or triple team me."

While the Bears hit six three-point shots in the first half, they were limited to just two-of-nine shooting in the second half.

"We did a really good job on Devanei Hampton," said McKeown. "Obviously, she's a premier player.  The second half we did a much better job.  We tried to make a conscious effort to contest the open threes. In the first half part of our strategy was to double them and make them shoot, and they made six threes.  So the second half we tightened up on the perimeter  I think more importantly was the way our players communicated in the second half."

Although Cal could be content with taking a 31-23 lead at halftime at holding George Washington to 9-of-34 shooting, there were some signs of concern. Hampton picked up her 2nd foul with 1:09 left, and all five of Cal's starters had played 17 or more minutes with guards Vital and Greif having played the entire 1st half. Additionally the Bears were without Rama N'Diaye who injured her right knee on Saturday and was in street clothes on Monday.  While the Bears attempted to use the 6-1 Adrian to give spot rest to Hampton and Walker, she's not nearly the disruptive interior presence that N'Diaye can be.

Yet you'll never find the Bears using fatigue as an excuse.  Although all of Cal's starters played more than 33 minutes, two of George Washington's players played 40 minutes, and Lawrence's late burst of energy came even though she'd played 37 minutes.

Postgame press conferences in postseason tournaments are difficult because invariably, one season's team comes to an end. Even though several players may return from one year to another, that will be a different team. For all of the highs and lows that a team goes through, when the season ends, it's the last time that this Cal team will have taken the floor together.

While the Bears only lose Krista Foster, she's the one holdover from the Caren Horstmeyer years, when the Bears found themselves overmatched in most conference games and talk of conference titles and NCAA tournament success might have seemed flat out crazy. And maybe in time, whether it's next week or next year or several years from know, this team will be able to appreciate what a landmark season 2007-2008 was.

But for now, it's too hard to look back at the season when you're trying to look past the last game. And even if the ebb and flow of Monday's game made for a wonderfully entertaining contest, the sort of games that all players look forward to playing, close games in front of big crowds with something of significance on the line, sometimes it's hard to look even that far.

"We lost," said Gray-Lawson. "It doesn't matter. We lost."
