California needed a top cornerback in the 2009 class. With offers out to some of the top prospects in NorCal, the Golden Bears landed their top prospect from SoCal. He ended his recruitment Thursday night choosing Cal over offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Nebraska, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, and Washington State among others...

Lynwood (Calif.) cornerback Vachel Samuels, who had a dozen offers, narrowed it down to one on Thursday night.

"I committed to Cal as a cornerback," said Samuels.

The three-star Samuels has offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Nebraska, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Washington State, Boise State and Fresno State among others.

"I was their number one defensive back on their board," said Samuels. "I committed not too long ago. All the coaches were hyped."

In Samuels, the Bears land one of the fastest rising defensive backs in the Southland, who's recruitment shot up in the last few weeks.

In the end, the Bears presented the best opportunity for Samuels.

"They have everything I need, from a chance to get a great education to playing for a great football program," said Samuels.

Nationally, Samuels is ranked #28 at cornerback and is one of the top corners in the West.

"I'm very happy to get this process over with," said Samuels. "It also gives the coaches a chance to go and recruit other kids at my position. I'm thankful for every school who gave me a chance and who believed in my talent."

Samuels finished his junior season with 60 tackles, two fumbles caused and one sack. Academically, he has a 3.5 GPA and a 24 on the ACT.
