Chandler WR Enjoys Trip to Berkeley

Chandler (AZ) WR Markus Wheaton has offers from all his favorites. And now, he has officially visited all his favorites after returning from his trip to California over the weekend. He says he may take this two remaining official visits in the next month. For now, he tells Cal Sports Digest, "I liked everything about Cal…"

Markus Wheaton (6-1, 175) and teammate Bryce Lamb officially visited California over the weekend. They were hosted by former Chandler High players, Cameron Jordan and Marc Anthony.

Cal Sports Digest caught up with Wheaton Sunday night just minutes after he arrived home from Berkeley.

"It was nice," Wheaton said of his Cal visit. "I liked everything about it. The coaching staff, they were pretty cool. I wanted to sit in student section, but they wouldn't let us. It was wild. They were over there having fun. It was crazy."

The trip to Northern California's Bay Area was a first for Wheaton. He says he enjoyed the atmosphere and says the weather was a bit warmer than he expected but said, "It cooled off a lot [at night]."

Cal is recruiting him as a receiver as is every school save UCLA, which likes him as defensive back. Wheaton says he prefers to play receiver at college and can see himself in the Bears' offense.

"They didn't do too much passing [vs. UCLA]," said Wheaton. "It was pretty lopsided [win]."

He says he did not get to talk to any of the Bear receivers, and talked to Head Coach Jeff Tedford mainly on Sunday.

"We got to the game late, our driver was late," said Wheaton. "When we got there, they were already in warm-ups. I didn't get to talk to [Coach Tedford] before the game. I mostly talked to him today (Sunday)." Wheaton said talks about the new facilities being built were a huge topic in their discussions. He says Cal was not pressuring him to commit, but holding by their commitment to him to decide what is best.

He has now official tripped to Cal, Oregon, and Colorado, which he says comprise his favorites. What about his big offer recently from USC?

"We haven't talked lately," said Wheaton. "But USC is definitely there."

However, he has not scheduled a trip to USC or any other school for that matter. He says he has no idea where he would like to take his final trips.

"If I do take [my last two official visits], it will be in the next month or so," said Wheaton.

Meanwhile, he says UCLA and Oregon State are recruiting him the hardest outside his favorites. Nebraska was as well but have tailed off recently. Wheaton says Lincoln is too far from home, and says he it will come down to the Pac-10 and Colorado for his college choice. Meanwhile, he is holding steady on his favorites and says he has no timeline to make his decision.

Wheaton reports a 2.7 GPA. He could not recall his SAT score, but says he is retaking it soon.
