Premier Pac-10 Games of Week 12

The Rose Bowl is still a possibility for Oregon State, but they must get by Cal. And for the Bears, the race for the Holiday Bowl might go all the way to the last week of the season. The most intriguing game this week besides Cal-OSU is Arizona at Oregon. With a few weeks left in the season, the teams in the top half of the Pac-10 is still trying to solidify the best possible bowl game invite…

California 6-3 (4-2) at No. 23 Oregon State 6-3 (5-1)

The Beavers got off to a rough start losing to Stanford and then getting embarrassed at Penn State, but those losses were forgotten when Oregon State upset the USC Trojans.

Now, the Beavers control their own destiny. If they win out, they will represent the Pac-10 in the Rose Bowl. The Golden Bears at this point would like to win the next three games and make it to the Holiday Bowl. This week's game is one that the Bear defense must step up and provide multiple opportunities for the offense. The Bears must find a way to contain OSU running back Jacquizz Rodgers who has rushed for 1,089 yards and 10 touchdowns. At 5-foot-6 and 180 lbs, Rodgers is very difficult to find behind the Beavers offensive line. California must concentrate and make sure they wrap up and bring down Jaquizz.

The Bears have always had something go wrong on offense this year. A receiver might drop a ball or one of the quarterbacks might over or under throw a receiver. It finally seems like the Bears have a go to receiver in Verran Tucker and all the offense might need is for one of the quarterbacks to be consistent with their throws. If Cal can get the running game and passing game clicking at the same time they might be able to beat OSU on the road.

Cal Sports Digest says…Bears continue to struggle away from Memorial Stadium.

Arizona 6-3 (4-2) at Oregon 7-3 (5-2)

This is a big game for both of these teams. Both squads lost to USC, but Arizona was able to beat Cal and the Ducks could not get by the Bears. Oregon has a very good running game. The Wildcats need to force Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli to become a passing quarterback and limit his running opportunities. Masoli is only completing 52.4% of his passes.

Arizona must be consistent with their running game and occasionally hit receiver Mike Thomas with the deep ball. The Wildcats can exploit the Ducks defense if they can get tight end Rob Gronkowski involved early and often. This loss will sting a lot for one of these teams.

Cal Sports Digest…'Cats are still not good enough to win a big road game.
