Emerald Bowl Central

The California Golden Bears will make their 20th bowl appearance – sixth straight –when they take on the Miami Hurricanes in the Emerald Bowl on December 27 in San Francisco. Cal is 1-2 all-time versus Miami.

Under head coach Jeff Tedford, California has enjoyed many postseason opportunities. The 2008 Emerald Bowl will mark the sixth straight bowl game the Bears will participate in under Tedford. This will be the first time Cal will face an ACC team in a bowl since the 1992 Citrus Bowl.

Miami finished 7-5 on the season. Miami's signature wins included a narrow 16-14 decision over 2008 ACC champion Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and Virginia. After a 2-3 start, which included a lost to No. 1 Florida, the Hurricanes went on a five-game winning streak. The Hurricanes ended the season with two losses to Georgia Tech and N.C. State after entering the top 25 rankings in mid-November.

Miami returns to bowl competition following a one-year hiatus. The Hurricanes edged Nevada, 21-20, in the 2006 MPC Computers Bowl. In this decade, Miami has won a national championship, played in three BCS bowls, including two national title games, and consecutive Chick-fil-A Bowls in 2004-05.

The Bears are 1-2 all-time against the Hurricanes. They last met in 1990 in Memorial Stadium, which Cal lost 52-24 to 10th ranked Miami. They met the previous year, 2nd ranked Miami beat Cal 31-3 en route to the 1989 national championship. The Bears only victory in the series came in 1964, when they won 9-7 at Miami.

The 7th Annual Emerald Bowl will kick off Saturday, December 27, at 5 p.m. at San Francisco's AT&T Park. It will be nationally televised on ESPN. It is the only game, college or pro, scheduled for television the evening of the 27th.
