Cal Is Marsh's Whole Package

Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian defensive tackle Cassius Marsh visited Berkeley with his mother the day before verbally committing to California. He says he had known for months Cal was the place for him, but had to make sure it was okay with mom. The next morning, Marsh called Cal defensive line Coach Tosh Lupoi and committed…

Cassius Marsh (6-4, 280) is one of the top defensive tackles in the nation. However, the California Golden Bears are recruiting him to play strong side defensive end in their 3-4 defense.

"I'm excited because there are so many opportunities to make plays because they stunt so much," Marsh said of moving to defensive end. "There is a lot more freedom at the defensive end position. It's really not that much different from what I play now, I'll just be on the outside."

Marsh took an unofficial visit to Cal on February 28 for junior day. Weeks before, he had almost committed to USC. He says he was caught up in the emotion, "My hormones got a hold of me," he added. He returned to Berkeley this past weekend for another unofficial visit this time with his mother.

"The day before we had sat down with [head] coach [Jeff Tedford and talked about everything," Marsh said of his latest Cal visit. "I loved the place. I have known for a couple months I wanted to go there. It was just all on my mom. My mom and I are pretty close. I got back [home] the night before Easter and the next morning, I called Coach Lupoi and committed."

Cal defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi is fast becoming one of the top recruiters in the nation. A few days ago, linebacker commit Cecil Whiteside praised Coach Lupoi to, and Marsh was no different.

"I talked to Coach Lupoi everyday, we are pretty close," said Marsh. "[Our relationship] was a big part [of my decision] because he showed me everything when I went up there. I was with him during my visits. He answered all my questions."

But Lupoi wasn't the only reason Marsh chose Cal.

"As far as facilities, it's a big part of it," said Marsh. "But the campus is amazing, the school is amazing, and the degree is amazing."

Nonetheless, he plans to take some official visits to a few other schools. Besides an official to Berkeley, Marsh says trips to USC and Tennessee are likely, but he says he is unsure his other visits.

"The coaches actually encourage me to take my official visits to make sure Cal is the place is where I want to be," said Marsh. "Plus, I promised my mom I'd take my official visits. As far as Cal goes, I get everything I want and need there. I absolutely love the place. It has the whole package. I know in my heart it's the place I want to be."

Marsh now can turn his attention to the books and becoming an honorary Golden Bear recruiter.

"I'm gonna try," Marsh said of convincing some of the top players in the nation to join him at Cal, including his Oaks Christian teammates.

"I'm trying to get Lache Seastrunk. I know he has named Cal as one of his top schools. I talked to Jay Guy a lot, and I'm going to try and get in touch with the new linebacker commit [Cecil Whiteside]. I'll do my best to get players to come with me like Malcolm [Jones], [Zac] Stout or [Erik] Kohler."

Marsh reports a 2.5 GPA. He takes SAT later this spring.
