Cal Visits Rising NorCal WR

Elk Grove (Calif.) Pleasant Grove WR Jalen Saunders is a rising prospect in Northern California. The 5-foot-9 standout was among the top receivers at this past Sunday's Stanford Nike Camp. He currently holds three offers from non-BCS schools, but Cal dropped by his school on Tuesday for a visit…

Jalen Saunders (5-9, 145) was one of the few wideouts mentioned in the same breath as Stanford Nike Camp WR MVP Ross Apo – a Texas verbal commit – on Sunday. But unlike Apo, Saunders possesses a different game. He is not going to overpower opposing defensive backs, but with 4.4 speed, there is no need.

He says he has offers from Fresno State, Nevada, and UNLV – all three coming in March and April. Now, the Pac-10 is starting to show more interest as the spring evaluation is in full swing.

"I think it was [WR] Coach Kevin Daft," Saunders said of the Cal assistant coach that visited the Pleasant Grove campus on Tuesday. "This is the first time I've talked with Cal actually. They're recruiting me. They invited me to their camp on June 15."

Saunders says Arizona and Oregon State are the only other Pac-10 schools recruiting him thus far. Both those schools along with the Bulldogs, Rebels and San Jose State comprise his top five. But the SEC is also somewhat in the picture.

"My uncle talked to LSU, and I got invited to Florida's camp," said Saunders. "Trying to get more exposure, I didn't really have a big [junior] year," he added as his main reason for camping in Gainesville.

He also plans to camp at Cal – if in town – and at Fresno State June 20-21. He says he would like make a decision in either August or September. "Whatever school fits me best," Saunders said of his criteria for choosing.

Academically, he reports a 2.9 cumulative GPA. He scored a 790 on the SAT (two-part).
