What follows is a just-slightly-edited transcript of our conversation.</p>

Let's start off with when you played at Cal. What years were you here, and who were your coaches?

I played from 1985 until 1987, the first year under Dick Kuchen, then two years under Lou Campanelli.

Some highlights of those years?

Those were really fun years. Cal had been down so long, often finishing in the bottom half of the Pac-10. When Lou Campanelli came in, he lit a fire under the whole program, and taught us to believe in ourselves. He started midnight madness, you know. Before then, a typical crowd at Harmon was 1,000 to 3,000 fans.

It really got started in Campanelli's first year. I remember playing Nevada-Reno; they had a unique style, very up and down the court. We were down by four with one minute left in the game. In the years before that, that would have been it, we would have folded, but Campanelli taught us about character, and somehow we pulled it out. I remember we were all kind of shocked by doing that, but it felt good.

Then against USF - they were up three with five seconds left in the game, and remember there was no such thing as a three point shot then. One of our guys went the length of the court for a lay-up, and USF made the classic mistake of fouling on the shot. But then our guy missed the foul shot with 1 sec left, and we got the put-back for the win. The whole place was shocked. I think maybe that was the game that started the buzz around campus and about Cal Basketball - looking back on it now, which might have been the actual turning point.

The of course, a highlight was January 25, 1986, the game when we broke that awful UCLA streak. What a madhouse when we won that game.

What was it like, being a player on the floor then?

Well, it was great, of course. You always like winning the big game. But what really made me realize the importance of it was seeing all the alumni in the stands, jumping about, and hugging each other, many of them in tears. It wasn't just another game, for sure. That was probably when I made my real connection to Cal.

The oft-told story about KJ in those years was that he and Campanelli were in a struggle of wills, that KJ wanted to play a much more open game, while Campanelli was a stern disciplinarian, a task master for whom it was his way or the highway. How did you see that situation?

Well, it is certainly true that Campanelli would tell you exactly what he wanted done, and he would take your commitment to do that - and then hold you strictly to your word.

Kevin was such a talented athlete, electrifying. And when we came out of high school, we just weren't used to discipline, it took a lot of getting used to. And the discipline didn't start with Campanelli; Dick Kuchen was a pretty good coach too. In fact Campanelli harvested a lot of talent that Kuchen brought into the program.

Years later, Kevin said to me that Campanelli had taught him a lot. Not just to play the game, but to understand it, to understand what the point guard position was all about in its broadest sense. Kevin could always get up and down the floor, playing wild creative basketball; he could do that coming out of high school. But it was here that he learned so much more about the game. He sure went on to use it all later, didn't he?

What was recruiting like in those days?

Very different, principally on two fronts. For one thing, there were many fewer rules. There were no limits on the number of visits a coach could make with a player. Some teams would put assistant out on the road for six months straight, doing nothing but round-robin visits with players they wanted to get.

And of course there was no Internet, and the use of videotapes was in its infancy. Now it is so much easier to get a lot of information about each candidate, and it's that much easier for your opponents too.

Who was recruiting you out of high school?

Washington State and USF, though they dropped basketball my senior year because of that scandal. That was a tragedy for Bay Area basketball; we're really pleased to have gotten the rivalry started again this year. In any case, I was sure I wanted to stay on the West Coast; I'm just not an east coast guy. So I chose St. Mary's, they had a very good team in a very competitive conference. Cal did recruit me some in those days, but already had some guys at my position, so I think I made the right choice.

2 years later I transferred to Cal. A tough decision in many ways, controversial at the time, but looking back on it I now know for sure it was the very best decision for me.

And after Cal, what then?

I played overseas for a year, in Evreaux, France, just 45 minutes northwest of Paris. That was a truly great experience; you learn so much about the world and yourself when you are in a different country for a while. Even while you play the game, and while you put away a few bucks, you are also improving as a human being, broadening your perspective.

But truth is, I knew I was no NBA guy. Long back, probably in my junior year at Cal, I decided that I wanted to coach. I did go on to pick up with an Australian touring team after I went through a long rehab of an ankle injury. I guess my ego got involved; I wanted to prove that I could make it with another team after that injury. So I did, got that worked out of my system, and finally got clear that it was time to head for a real job - always with coaching in the back of my head.

I did try a shot at mortgage banking. Made some good money for six months, but the coat and tie stuff - I just hated it.

How old were you at this point?

24 years old.

And then?

The next year, Lou Campanelli had an opening for a volunteer. In those days it was either a volunteer of a graduate assistant, and I got the slot. I did that for a year, then he promoted me to the three slot for the next two years. That was my start in coaching, so I owe a lot to Coach Campanelli.

For the next several years, I jumped around a lot - Davis, Pepperdine, then Santa Barbara for four years.

How did you come to Ben Braun's attention?

Well, we had met on the road a few times so we were acquainted, and he knew of my history at Cal. I guess maybe it was partly just the breaks of the game. Ben had a late opening come up - September I think, and I was very fortunate, he decided to take a chance on me.

What do you think you had done right to attract his interest?

You know, I'm really not sure, maybe you should ask him. Perhaps it was because I had been on the west coast a long time, and had been on the road for nine years. And of course I had focused on big-man skills and that fit his needs too. Given my size and role when playing basketball, the big-man issues came naturally to me.

Coaching here has been a great pleasure, because we're not only coaching, were helping these young men see things and learn things, both on and off the court.

So you're adding mentoring to the mix now?

Oh yes, absolutely. Teaching, mentoring, coaching, I just love that whole package.

One of the best things that happened to me in my life were a few moments when an experienced counselor would take me aside and deliver some stern words, urging me to make some corrections in what I was doing or where I was headed. Those words really stand out for me now, later in life. I'm very much aware of the role we coaches can play in helping these guys achieve their goals and come out of it better human beings.

Here at Cal, how do you coaches divide up areas of responsibility?

One of the real strengths of Ben Braun as a head coach is his ability to take inputs of all kinds from all the coaches. Each of us have different personalities, different skills, different strengths, and Ben is very effective at drawing out the best from his staff. To me, that's the sign of an effective head coach.

From the sidelines, we can see Coach Braun first talk to his assistants during every time out, then turn to the team huddle with instructions. What's going on there?

Sometimes he'll have a specific problem he wants to solve, and he'll ask us each for inputs on whatever it is. Other times he'll ask each of us for a more general survey of what we thing is happening on the court, where we see tactics that could help. You know, we have by now worked together quite a while, so we already know a lot about where he wants to go and why.

And of course sometimes, one or more of us will have nothing to say; it's a very free-flowing conversation. And it's not limited to me on the big guys, for example, cause I may see a point guard issue too - and Ben wants all inputs.

But you do have some focus on the big guys in practice, right? Amit, Hughes, Paris, Conner, and Jordi?

Oh certainly. To start, you have to know that Ben is an expert on big man play, so I talk to him every day about each of our guys, he helps set the goals and priorities for what we'll work on in practice. And along with the general skills, each guy is different; each one is at a different point in development of skills. I'm very fortunate that Ben then lets me have a lot of lattitude in how I work toward our goals.

Gabe's needs are just not the same as David's, or Amit's. Clearly there are some consistent things we want them all to be good at - but we certainly would not want to keep Amit only on the block, however, not when he is such an effective scorer from anywhere on the court. In fact, we spend time with him improving his perimeter game while also working on post skills. We don't ever want to diminish skills, we want to add to them.

No question we do need more of an inside presence, so we are working on that with Amit - and with all the guys. You know he has so much maturity; he brings a lot of that to practice and to the team. In fact - the younger guys know this about him, and have to make a joke of it, you know, they call him "that thirty year old guy". Amit laughs about that a lot, the relationships are very good.

CyberBears have forever debated just exactly how much more eligibility Amit has. Can you answer that and end the debate?

You know, that's a great question, and I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that I truly don't know. I really am such a here-and-now guy, focused on this next game, that I just don't pay attention to that. Ben is the guy who knows all this stuff - you'll have to ask him.

In the USF game, David Paris let fly with a beautiful hook from about eight feet out, scored easily. The shot looked unstoppable. But then it disappeared, why?

People just don't realize just what a huge transition it is from high school basketball to the D1 level. There is just so much for these young guys to learn. For example, on that shot, you have to realize it is not just making the shot, it is learning how to time the flow of the game, so that you're stepping to that spot at the right time, in place to catch the incoming pass, and only then to make the shot attempt. In the D1 game where everything moves so much faster, it's a lot of skill and practice just to master those fundamentals.

But you're right, he's got a very nice shot, and we all have high expectations for him. He's coming along fine; he'll be a force.

In that same game, David didn't step out to defend the paint when an opponent drove down the middle for an easy two. Looked like he was maybe thinking too much and not yet fully engaged?

That's more of the same issue, especially that these guys did not have to play much defense in high school, they just never had to think about it before. And remember that we've added a lot of new faces this year, there's still a lot of learning going on between players getting to know each other and their game.

CyberBears have heard a lot about several commits from some very talented high school players. I know we can't discuss names, so let me ask you this. What do you do as a staff - what can you do - to keep a verbal solid, to prevent it from wavering.

Truth is, it really comes down to the basics: you have to recruit kids who really want to be here. Who know what Cal is, what Cal is like, who the coaches are, who their new teammates will be - and who really want to be here.

Of course we do call each player, or email them, as often as we are legally allowed to do, and we try to be sure that those encounters are as effective as we can make them. But you've got to find that right kid, who deep in his heart has committed to this school, to this team, to this coach.

And you know who really does the recruiting? It's the team. When a guy comes into town, the team takes over. Of course they are really interested in team success, so they have a committed interest too. And of course they are the best ambassadors, they know all the ins and out of Berkeley life, and don't mind sharing a lot of experience about the place with the newcomer. We couldn't do the recruiting job that we do without them.

Do you divide up recruiting by geography?

It's different for us, not like football as I understand it. We're recruiting a much smaller number of players than football does, so Coach wants all of us to have a good look at each of the recruits. And when it comes time for commitments, we'll try to assess which of us has had the best relationship with the kid, or his coach, or his family as we judge the importance of those.

Just a few more specifics. How's Rod Benson doing? I met him, he's certainly a very pleasant guy to get to know.

Yes, he certainly is. And he is giving our guys total fits on the practice floor each day. The guy has a quickness and athleticism about him that so often gets him that extra step. He did come in kind of thin, but he's working very hard on that now, I think he's up twenty pounds already. You have to remember the old saw about how big men mature later in life - I ought to know, that certainly happened to me. Rod's coming along fine - he'll be better this spring, then better this summer, and much better come next fall. He already has great leaping ability, which makes him so effective on his face-up jumper which is already a weapon.

Is Midgely going to get more playing time?

I want to answer your question, but not in those terms. We've come to learn, as coaches, that playing time is a loaded topic - the words can get interpreted so many different ways and end up being misconstrued. And the truth is, we never really think in terms of playing time, except perhaps from the standpoint of keeping fresh bodies on the floor.

What we in fact do is try to assess the situation on the floor and make our best match of skills to the game. Each guy has his own strengths and weaknesses, and these work more or less well with our other players who are on the floor at the moment. So we work to keep the right team on the floor at all times - and that is certainly influenced by whatever set of players the opponent has on the floor too. And other issues like the score, fouls, time outs left, adn so on. And then - however the playing time breaks - that's the result, not the target.

But I can say this. Richard has come up big for us over and over again. And he's a deeply competitive guy too. Did you know he played rugby? That's a very tough game. Did you see that incident on the sideline against Kansas where Richard put his face right into the face of an opponent? He's the kind of guy who will look you straight in the eye, and say, "Let's play".

One last question: As you have seen this team develop, what are your goals for the team now. now? How do you define them?

In a broad sense, maybe a bit vague, the best answer comes from the fact that Coach Braun is a teacher at heart. Therefore he wants us to improve from day one until the last day of the year, and from day one the next year, and so on. Strength, fitness, skills, our goal is to get each of these better every day.

Yes, you're right, that is kind of vague. How about something more specific, like team intensity? In some early games this year, we've seen the team come out flat, or go flat for extended periods in a game, only to pick it up later.

Well you're certainly right about that, and we are working hard on that right now. Myself I tend to put that on the fact that we have so many new faces that the guys are still a little unsure about where the next move is going to come from and are waiting to be sure they're ready to support it as it develops. But that's changing fast, and I think you'll see a lot of improvement on that front right in the next few games.

And high post presence? Wouldn't more of that provide more opportunities for passing, quick cuts to the basket, and blocking out when someone is attempting a dribble-drive?

Yes, of course. That was the biggest question we had coming into this season, and it probably still is the biggest question. We're showing some signs of real improvement there, did you see Gabe getting involved against Kansas? Before we're through, this team will be much stronger in the paint. Look for great contributions from Hughes, Paris and Famulener to complement what Amit brings to the game.

Thank you for the time you've spent with us, Coach Wheeler. I've enjoyed this process, and believe readers at CyberBears will enjoy the results. We look forward to a great season.
