Forbes Commits to Bears

Fredrick (Md.) Thomas Johnson linebacker Nick Forbes recently narrowed his list of schools down to six: California, Duke, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and West Virginia. On Friday, he verbally committed to the Golden Bears…

Nick Forbes (6-0, 225) is the nation's No. 7 rated outside linebacker according to He has been on the national radar for some time garnering offers from many of the top programs in the nation, which he narrowed down to six recently. All had a heavy focus on academics.

"I want to go to a school with a good engineering program. I want to be a mechanical engineer," Forbes told earlier this year.

"I want to go to a school where I can get a good degree. My mom reminds me that football will be over some day. Even if I make it to the NFL, guys retire in their 20s. So, I need to have an education for life after football."

That is exactly the type of school Forbes chose on Friday. "I committed to Cal," he said via text.

Forbes is an explosive linebacker with the strength and frame to play MIKE or SAM at the next level. However, he has superb ball skills, and he is solid in pass coverage. A fundamentally sound player, Forbes is always in position to make plays. He is not a prototypical sideline-to-sideline backer, but he has decent speed and is extremely smart.

He was selected all-conference at both linebacker and running back in 2008. But he earned all-state honors as a linebacker.

Academically, he carries a 3.6 core GPA. He scored 1030 on the SAT (two-part).
