Beverly Hills (Calif.) defensive end Greg Townsend Jr. is the player that Southland football fans need to get to know.
Townsend's father, Greg, played in the NFL for 15 seasons, 11 of them with the Los Angeles Raiders. Now his son, a 6-4, 240-pounder, is becoming one of the top 2011 prospects in Southern California.
Townsend had a stellar showing in Los Angeles last week at USC's Rising Stars Camp, and while he didn't get an offer from the Trojans, he received good feedback.
"They're near offering me but they told me to keep up the hard work on the field and in the classroom and I would be able to have a chance to play at USC," said Townsend.
The Trojans are just one of many programs that have been showing serious interest in Townsend.
"I'm hearing a lot from UCLA, Oregon and Arizona State and then I have a lot of other schools who've send letters and questionnaires and invited me to their camps," said Townsend. "I'm also interested in Miami and in TCU (where his father played)."
Townsend said that he's grown up dreaming of playing for USC, but at this point in his recruitment, he's open to anyone.
"I still want to be able to explore all of my decisions because things can always change in recruiting," said Townsend.
Townsend said he's put together an early top five of schools.
"USC, UCLA, Oregon, Cal and Miami are my top five," said Townsend. "And then somewhat TCU because of my father playing there."
Townsend said his performance at USC wasn't really a surprise to him, since his goal going in was to make an impression.
"I knew the best of the best were going to be there and I just knew that I had to work hard because no one really knew about me," said Townsend. "It was a coming out party for me basically, because I tried to play alongside the top defensive lineman and against the best players on the offensive line."
Townsend said he's hopeful offers start making their way to him come September 1st (the first day juniors can be given offers in writing) but he's not worried about it. "If I keep doing what I know I'm capable of doing, I'll be fine," said Townsend.
As a 2008 sophomore at Beverly Hills, Townsend had 38 tackles and three sacks.
