"I wasn't really able to hang out with the coaches too much but it was more of a trip than a recruiting thing for me. I got a chance to see San Francisco, Berkeley, and Oakland while I was out there. I met up with Jerome Meadows (current Cal DE) who played at Broome High and went out to eat with him. I talked with him and learned what he liked about it out there. I'm definitely taking an official out there though."
What stood out to Willis about California the most?
"It's nice out there. The weather is just perfect and it's like that all the time. I got see a little bit of the campus at California. It's a nice school with good academics. I wasn't able to interact with the coaches because they were on vacation. That will be my first official visit though."
"The visit definitely moved them up for me. I wouldn't mind being out there at all. I really enjoy the relationships I have with their staff."
Willis still has the same list in his top 5 of Florida State, Tennessee, North Carolina, California, and UCLA. We asked him what his timeframe was regarding making a final decision and he replied, "Sometime soon. Sooner than I thought actually. Probably midseason or maybe even a little before that."
One of Willis' closest friends is teammate DE Corey Miller who just committed to Florida State. That commit has sparked some to say that the Noles have the inside track for Willis now.
"You know Corey's decision is not really going to have an affect on mine. You gotta go through the process on your own. Corey feels like FSU is his perfect fit and I'm trying to find my fit now."
Brandon says visits will cease now with summer almost over. He'll turn his attention to his upcoming senior season and will start to plan his official visits accordingly.
Last year, Willis and the Rebels won yet another AAAA Division 1 state championship. The team is looking to try and repeat once again this season but is also once again in the national championship picture. Willis shared his feelings on both topics with us.
"You know I just say take it one day and one game at a time. Last year we were in that national championship talk but we kinda dropped the ball. We are looking for a state championship again but we have to take things one game at a time and if a national championship comes then it comes. We thought we were gonna beat Dorman last year but they came out and beat us so we have to remain focused on our opponents for that coming week."
The trip to Calfornia obviously helped the Bears' chances and it remains to be seen just how his recruitment will unfold.
Stay tuned for more updates with Brandon Willis as his recruitment continues to evolve.
