Another Cal Trip for East Coast OL

The California Golden Bears have secured three verbal offensive linemen commits in the 2010 class. The coaches are pursuing at least one more o-line commit, preferably an offensive tackle, including one talented prospect from the state of Maryland...

Three-star Hyattsville (MD) DeMatha Catholic High School offensive tackle Shane Johnson (6-5, 300) has decided to hold off from making an early commitment and now says he doesn't have a time frame for a decision.

"I'll set up my trips for after the season and commit after that," Johnson said. "I don't want anything getting in the way of my season."

Johnson, ranked as the No. 24 offensive guard in the country by Scout.com, still denies a leader but favors Pittsburgh, California, Rutgers, Wake Forest and Virginia. He says all have offered.

"Pittsburgh is recruiting the most," he said. "They call me every week and I really like (wide receiver) coach Bryan Bossard. He tells me about the team and keeps me in the loop on everything.

"I also really like (offensive line) coach Tony Wise," Johnson said. "He's a very experienced line coach and has produced some great linemen.

"I like the team camaraderie at Pittsburgh too," he said. "They are like a family up there."

Johnson has already been to all of his favorites, but admits he still wants to take official visits as well. One school he's looking forward to visiting again is Cal.

"California is a nice place," he said. "I was out there this summer and really liked it. It's a great environment and the program is nice. They have really good coach and I like the hot weather a lot too.

"Plus, Cal is a great academic school," he said.

"I like Rutgers too," Johnson said. "The program is building up and getting better. The have really nice new facilities and are updating the stadium too."

Johnson admits his environment is going to be an important factor in his decision and that's one of the things about Wake Forest he likes the most.

"It's a small school and everything there is really close and compact," he said. "The dorms are right next to the football facilities so it's really convenient."

The only camp that Johnson went to during the summer was Boston College's.

Johnson grew up following Maryland and although the Terps have offered he says he now wants to get away for college.

Another school that Johnson has always liked is Virginia. "I've always liked them," he said. "I've been to a few games there when I was younger and I just remember loving it. It's a great place."

Besides wanting to get away Johnson says he's looking for a team that is, "always together and where the coaches treat the players well."

Johnson reports a 2.9 core GPA and took the SAT and says he's qualified.
