Ed. Note to CyberBear readers: This article begins our series on incoming Cal players. These articles provide a first chance to get acquainted with the players as they prepare to move to Berkeley and to join Cal and the team. As many of you know, Coach Tedford has pulled off a major achievement in the quality of this incoming class. We'll enjoy reading about them here, then watching them on the playing field in the months ahead.
Now: Sam DeSa.
Prior to verballing in the spring to Jeff Tedford and the Cal program, DeSa was honored in March by the Biletnikoff Foundation as the 2002 Biletnikoff Award West Wide Receiver of the Year. The honor came in a ceremony that included Jerry Rice of the Oakland Raiders, Josh Reed of LSU, and DeSa as the High School honoree. As you can see from the picture of Sam's high school jersey mounted with that of Jerry Rice and Josh Reed (now with the Buffalo Bills), it truly was a great honor.
I had a chance to interview Sam DeSa for a few minutes, so here is a quick bio of Sam in his own words;
AWP - I saw that you had a great senior season at Monte Vista. Did you enjoy the defensive side of the ball more, or the offensive? People regard you as a WR mostly because of your 4.4 time in the 40, how do you feel about your speed...and your overall game?
DeSa - I personally enjoy the offensive side of the ball more since it's more of my specialty along with kick-off returns. I'm fortunate to have speed but at the college level everyone is pretty much the same speed unlike high school. What sets people apart is their work ethic and heart for the game. These are traits that I believe I possess.
AWP - Can you briefly describe what you want to work on before entering Cal?
DeSa - Before entering Cal I am going to work on many different areas of my game. Although I'm comfortable with my current weight of 180, I definitely need to get stronger in order to compete with the other players. I would like to work on my speed and agility as well, they can always get better. In addition, I want to work on my receiver skills such as route running, getting off the press, catching, and blocking. I want to be as prepared as possible so I can give myself the opportunity to play as early as possible.
AWP - Major that you are thinking about at UC-Berkeley?

AWP - The game that you are looking forward to the most at Cal is against whom?

AWP - What kind of practice habits do you have?
DeSa - I only take a few days off during the whole year. I'm constantly training for football whether it's in the weight room or on the track. I also work with my coaches on my receiver skills all the time. I try to be as polished of a receiver as I can, there's never a finish line.
