Cal Eyeing SoCal Corner

Gardena (Calif.) Serra cornerback Bene Benwikere has yet to take any official trips. A deep playoff run coupled with incomplete paperwork has prohibited the standout from visiting his favorite schools. He's holding steady at three offers, with a few more Pac-10 schools showing interest, including Cal...

Bene Benwikere (6-0, 180) has been making the most of his senior season.

Benwikere has helped anchor a stellar Serra secondary, and helped them to a 12-0 record and a date in the CIF-SS Northwest Division semifinals.

On the recruiting hunt, Benwikere said more schools have been dialoguing with him.

"Recruiting has been going pretty good," said Benwikere. "I've recently talked to Arizona State, they were at the game two weeks ago and then Cal came this week. Boise State has been talking to me and they want me to come there, but I would have to greyshirt."

Benwikere said all of his offers are still in place, including Iowa State, San Jose State and New Mexico.

"Nevada and UCLA talk to me every once in a while," said Benwikere. "With San Jose State, I'm waiting to see what happens with the coaching change."

Benwikere said his favorites are Cal, Arizona State and Boise State.

"Cal and Arizona State have talked about offering," said Benwikere. "I was supposed to visit ASU this last weekend, but a whole bunch of things needed to be taken care of, like I had to send paperwork to the NCAA. I was going to visit ASU with Paul Richardson and Shaquille Richardson."

In fact, Benwikere said the paperwork snafu, now straightened out, has kept him from taking the visits.

"I was supposed to go to Boise State this weekend, but I have to take the SAT subject test. So I'm going to take that later and same with Arizona State," said Benwikere. "And I'll be going to Iowa State for a visit."

Benwikere said that Boise State and Iowa State are planning to come for an in-home and Arizona State would be coming to see him again.

He's not in a rush to decide his future, though.

"Really, I don't have a timeframe," said Benwikere. "It's just pretty much, if Cal or Arizona State offer, I'm waiting on them."

On the season, Benwikere has 47 tackles, four breakups and four interceptions.
