Sample Talks Recruiting at Passing Down

Sacramento (Calif.) Grant safety James Sample has double-digit offers. But the four-star prospect is focused on two schools at the moment. Last Friday, the standout DB was one of the top performers at the Passing Down Elite 7-on-7 Challenge. We caught up with Sample to get the latest in his recruitment…

James Sample (6-2, 195) has offers from all his favorites – California, Oregon, and Washington. But the Golden Bears and Huskies are his leaders based on his visits to those respective campuses.

"Cal and Washington are the only two teams that I have met the entire staff," said Sample.

But the four-star prospect is in no rush to make a decision. He says he plans to go through the process and make a decision after his senior season.

Sample is known as a hard-hitting safety that is aggressive against the run. Last Friday, at the Passing Down Elite 7-on-7 Challenge, he had the opportunity to highlight his coverage skills.

"It's been hard because our team is new," Sample said after Team NorCal lost a heartbreaker to Team 559 on the final play in the opening round of the playoffs.

"It was a fun experience in Fresno. Even though some like to talk trash, it felt good to compete."

Team NorCal finished the evening with a 1-4 record, winning the fifth place game over Team Lions out of Kerman, Ca. Sample's Grant teammate Shaquille Thompson was also on Team NorCal. They also camped together at the Stanford NFTC in May and at Cal in June. Passing Down was their last camp of the summer. Five-star teammate Viliami Moala also camped with them at Stanford and Cal, and they have mentioned all continuing their careers together in college.

Sample reiterated that point last Friday evening.

"That's the plan, we all want to go to the same school," Sample said. "Cal is one of the schools we all want to go to."

Regardless if it comes to fruition, Sample plans to make his decision on a few factors. "Mostly the depth chart and academics," he added. "And the season, I want to see how far they go into the season. What bowl game they go to and their ranking."
