Thursday Practice News and Notes

The Bears went through their final official practice on Thursday morning. The helmets-only practice was purely for reviewing situations and certain plays. On Friday, the Bears will have a walkthrough, and then get into the mindset for Saturday's season opener against UC Davis…

Practice News & Notes
  • Junior Ernest Owusu will get the start at defensive end, though head coach Jeff Tedford reiterated that the line would have a heavy rotation. Junior Trevor Guyton and freshman Deandre Coleman will get plenty of time at defensive end.

"[Owusu] is explosive, and he's done a very good job," said Tedford.

Senior Cameron Jordan will start at the other end spot, while sophomore Kendrick Payne will start at nose tackle.

  • Junior Marvin Jones and true freshman Keenan Allen will start at wide receiver on Saturday, with senior Jeremy Ross and junior Mike Calvin being the primary backups. Calvin has always been praised for his playmaking ability in practice, but has seemingly always been deterred by injury. It is fitting, then, that Calvin pushed his way onto the two-deep roster and will get significant playing time.

"[Calvin] has been a lot more consistent," said Tedford. "I think his confidence has a lot to do with that. Through all his hard work and dedication over the summer by catching balls, I think he's getting a lot of confidence."

For the newcomers, junior Coleman Edmond will be a part of the rotation, but Tedford said that the staff has not decided whether Kaelin Clay and Tevin Carter will redshirt. Tedford mentioned the possibility that they may play several games down the line, depending on other circumstances (such as injury or performance), but Tedford made it sound as if they will probably not play tomorrow.

  • Tedford once again confirmed that sophomore Isi Sofele will be the primary kickoff returner, and Ross will be the primary punt returner. As for the backups, Tedford said that Coleman Edmond will backup both return spots, and Keenan Allen will be the other backup kickoff returner.

  • In terms of health, the Bears are ready to go. Aside from sophomore Matt Summers-Gavin, who will play on Saturday, the two-deep is healthy and ready to go full speed for Saturday.
