Men's Basketball

On Dec. 4 the Knights will travel to the brand new Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena to face the Gators.  It will mark the Gators' 73rd appearance in Jacksonville, but their first since Jan. 19, 1998 in Billy Donovan's third year as Florida head coach.

Women's Crew

Mary Shofner was named new University of Wisconsin women's lightweight varsity crew coach

Shofner joined the crew staff as the women's lightweight varsity coach Aug. 11, according to head women's rowing coach Maren LaLiberty.

Shofner was previously an assistant coach for the University of Rhode Island, where she commanded the novice team, headed recruiting efforts and was a boat and equipment technician. Shofner also served as an assistant coach for the varsity lightweight team at the UCF, her alma mater.

At UCF, Shofner rowed from 1997-2000 and earned a bachelor's degree in organizational communications and a minor in psychology.

Prediction from West Virginia

WVU has several games they should win. There's probably universal agreement that matchups with East Carolina, Cincinnati, Rutgers, UCF and Temple should tilt in WVU's favor. There's always the chance of an upset, of course, so I'm not writing down an automatic 5-0. More like 4 1/2-1/2. (Save the emails, I know there are no ties. It's all part of my highly unscientific prediction system.)

Professional Football

New England Patriots

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: CB Asante Samuel - The rookie corner spent the whole week working opposite Ty Law with the first unit after seemingly moving past fellow rookie and higher draft pick Eugene Wilson on the depth chart. He also started over Wilson against the Redskins Saturday night and nearly had an interception while notching his first sack. Samuel, a fourth round pick out of Central Florida, had a couple more interceptions last week in practice and has at least 10 during training camp, including one on the goal line that he returned 100 yards for a touchdown. He is physical and aggressive and most importantly, has remained competitive as the preseason tempo picked up with the start of game action.

UCF Press Release

ORLANDO UCF Athletics Director Steve Orsini announced that UCF head baseball coach Jay Bergman has agreed to a new five-year contract. Bergman, in his 22nd year at UCF, is now under contract through the 2008 season.

"We wanted to make a long term commitment to Jay based on what he has meant to this program," stated Orsini. "His name is on the field and we are very proud of Jay."

Bergman has transformed the UCF baseball program into one of the nation's elite. With a career record of 1,043-587-3 and a UCF mark of 827-474, Bergman has led the Golden Knights to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and six Atlantic Sun Championships. In 2002, Bergman became the 25th coach in NCAA history to capture 1,000 career wins.

"I am very pleased with the new contract and I really appreciate all of the hard work that Steve Orsini and the athletics department did to make this happen," said Bergman. "It meant a lot to me personally to get the deal done and I know it took some extra preparation from Steve and the department. I look forward to continue the winning tradition here at UCF."

More than 100 of Bergman's former players have signed professional contracts including five first round selections. A total of 10 former players have also reached Major League Baseball including current Detroit Tiger Mike Maroth. quick links:
