UCF Over The Citadel 74-60

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Roberto Morentin scored 19 points hitting 9-of-10 shots from the field to lead UCF (2-1) over The Citadel (2-1) 74-60 at McAlister Field House Friday evening. UCF was able to expand a five-point halftime advantage to 14 points after opening the second half with a 9-0 run spurred by a pair of three pointers from Marcus Avant.

It was the first double-digit lead of the game for UCF, one they would never relinquish and push to as many as 21 in the second half.

After falling behind 3-0 in the early going, Morentin's tip-in gave the Golden Knights a 6-5 lead just under four minutes into the game. The Knights were not able extend their lead and the Citadel's Matt Davis took advantage hitting a three to knot the game at 10. Following a Josh Bodden free throw, Troy Lindbeck gave UCF some space and a 14-10 lead after hitting a trey.

Both teams continued to miss opportunities on the offensive end until trading three-point plays at the midway point of the first half.

The Bulldogs Kevin Hammock converted a three-point play to tie the game at 16. Morentin answered back with his own traditional three-point play and his 11th point of the half to give the lead back to the Knights at 19-16.

The Citadel was able to draw to within 27-25, following Davis' third triple of the half. Kingsley Edwards extended the lead back to five following a shot from long range. UCF would eventually take the five-point advantage into the half leading 37-32 at the break. The two teams combined for 24 personal fouls and 11 turnovers in the opening stanza.

Rob Ross was the only other Knights player to reach double figures in scoring as he finished with 11 points, including three shots from behind the arc. Bodden led UCF on the glass pulling down 11 boards and helped the Knights hold the advantage on the glass 39-37. The Knights shot 49 percent (27-55) from the floor and hit seven shots from long range in 22 attempts. UCF finished the game 13 of 21 at the charity stripe.

Dante Terry and Davis led the Bulldogs scoring 12 and 10 points respectively. Max Mombollet led The Citadel on the boards grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. As a team, the Bulldogs shot 33 percent (21-63) from the floor and just 6 of 18 from three-point range. They also connected on 12 of 15 attempts at the line.

The Golden Knights will next be in action on Thursday, Dec. 4 when they take on the University of Florida. The game will be played in Jacksonville at the recently opened Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
