The Knights must figure out who there quarterback will be, as Junior Michael Greco is the only signal-caller with any experience, but redshirt freshman Joe Weatherford appears to be a slightly better passer with a better throwing motion. Also in the mix is redshirt freshman Nate Tice, who is the son on Jacksonville Jaguars assistant head coach Mike Tice.
UCF head coach George O'Leary must also find a suitable replacement for the nation's leading rusher, Kevin Smith, who declared early for the NFL draft. The Knights must account for Smith's better than 2600 rushing yard output of 2007. Injured running back Phillip Smith is the top candidate, and James Jamison has been turning some heads in spring practice.
Regarding freshman quarterback Mike Tice, there has been some talk about him possibly moving to another position if he can't beat out Joe Weatherford for backup duties. Tice is a solid athlete, and with a 6'4", 200 lb. frame, he is big enough to put on some more muscle without losing quickness, and could be a candidate to play tight end like his father did while in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings.
The Knights will be hosting a Junior Day this Saturday, where more than 100 top prospects from Florida and Georgia will be in attendance. It will be a good opportunity for these aspiring youngsters to see the superior facilities that the Knights can boast to recruits.
UCF's already strong defense could stay that way for the foreseeable future as the Knights have made offers to outside linebackers Daniel Mack (Dade Christian), and Mike Marry (Largo).
The Knights have also been in contact with defensive tackle Corey Gaines (Godby), and offensive and defensive lineman Andrew Carter from Leon High School.
