Troy Davis has given a verbal commitment to UCF, but as Coach George O'Leary has stressed, it is only a verbal commitment, nothing more.
Davis has received a scholarship offer from ECU along with UCF, and has also garnered strong interest from Vanderbilt and Maryland. Is UCF still on top for the three-star linebacker?
UCF may not have beaten USF this past Saturday, but it could have certainly been considered a victory in terms of recruiting. UCF's resolve and determination to never give up won the hearts of numerous recruits who attended the game, as many of the them where jumping up and down with the fans as Zombie Nation played during UCF's 14 point comeback. Troy Davis was one of those players.
"It was a great atmosphere," Davis told InsideKnights.com. "The team played well, I loved the comeback. The fans were so intense; it was one of the greatest things I ever saw."
At 6'2", 215 lbs, Davis has tremendous size, and could be like no linebacker UCF has ever had, as he has massive hands, a great frame and runs a 4.5 second 40-yard dash. The Knights certainly can see Davis in a UCF uniform and Davis can as well.
"I got to see everything for myself and I can really see myself out there. I loved everything about it."
O'Leary voiced concern in a press conference earlier this year that without an early signing period, recruits could be persuaded out of early commitments. Davis, who committed to UCF in late June, is seemingly one of the players that UCF does not have to worry about.
"I haven't received any more offers because other schools have called, and my coach has told them that I am 100% committed to UCF. I plan on taking my official visit to UCF in December, and might take another visit in five weeks or so."
Davis visited UCF this summer and loved the campus, prompting him to commit. The game against USF though was Davis' first experience watching the Knights live, and he was not only impressed with the fans, but by the team and more specifically, the linebackers.
"I thought the coaches used the linebackers real well. They kept a good rotation so everyone was fresh, so that was a good thing. The play of the linebackers wowed me a lot."
Before the season began, Davis played as a weak side linebacker for Berkmar H.S. (Ga.) but due to injuries, he has been forced to move inside, which Davis feels is a good thing.
"It's a challenge, there's a lot more scraping and reacting. It's helped a lot so far, and if I can play all three positions in high school, that would be great heading to UCF, because they play a base 4-3 like we do."
Currently Berkmar is 1-1, and Davis has high hopes for himself and his team.
"We've been competing to win the region for a while, but now I want to make a run at state. I think we have a legit shot."
Davis will gain more experience at linebacker this season and now playing inside will add more versatility to his game. Fortunately for the Knights, they are the lead candidates, and likely the only candidates, to acquire the potentially outstanding finished product that will be Troy Davis.
