When UCF offered Allen Hurns this week, he felt pretty relieved.
"It feels real good," Hurns told InsideKnights.com. "Coach Kelly told me that they would offer and then I got the offer in the mail."
UCF's David Kelly has already made an impact on the Miami area recently, as Jordan and Justin McCray committed to UCF on Monday. Has Kelly made an impression on Hurns?
"I like him, he's cool."
Hurns is somewhat familiar with UCF's recent offensive struggles and feels like he could make a positive impact on the team.
"I like them, but they don't have a quarterback right now."
When asked if he felt he could come in early and help inject some energy into the offense, Hurns said that he felt he could.
As a junior, Hurns had 440 receiving yards and four touchdowns for a Miami Carol City team that went 8-3. After an 0-2 start, Hurns and his teammates ripped off eight straight wins before narrowly falling in the first-round of the playoffs to Miramar, 28-26.
"We learned how to compete and what it takes to win in the playoffs. We have to work hard all year, we don't ever want to feel that away again."
Hurns offers an impressive combination of quickness and size. He currently stands at 6'1", 175 lbs. and has the frame to get bigger. He runs a 4.5 40-yard dash and uses that speed in track.
"I run track too. I run in the 400, the 4x1 and the 4x4."
Combining his size and knack for making big plays, Hurns is expecting an even bigger year next season from him and his teammates.
"I want to have over 700 receiving yards this year with 45 to 50 catches and 10 touchdowns. I started accumulating stats late last year, so I think I can improve my numbers. I expect a lot from my team, our whole offense is back."
A majority of the defense is also back for Miami Carol City, making Hurns and his teammates strong contenders in one of the most competitive regions of football in the nation.
While he has one lone offer, Hurns definitely expects some other schools to come around. What other schools have shown a lot of interest in him?
"Kansas State, Wisconsin, Florida State, Miami, Purdue and Pittsburgh."
Along with UCF, Hurns said that Pitt, FSU, Kansas State and Miami were all making strong impressions on him.
With UCF hauling in commitments left and right at a record pace for the program, does Hurns feel any pressure right now to join other UCF commits and pledge to the Knights before the summer heat picks up?
"Nah," said Hurns, who is attending camp at the University of Miami this weekend. "I'm looking to commit early on in the season though, probably around my team's fourth game."
It looks like schools are going to have to wait for this under-the-radar prospect.
