CMU Hoops Opens with Exhibition Win

MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University wrapped up the preseason portion of its 2004-05 men's basketball schedule with a 74-61 exhibition victory over Northwood University here Sunday afternoon.

The Chippewas will open the regular season at Evansville on Friday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m.

A full-court, harassing defense forced Northwood into 29 turnovers and helped CMU roll to a 46-35 halftime lead. The Chippewas led by as many as 21 points at 62-41 with 12:13 to play before the Timberwolves battled back. NU got to with 10 at 65-55 but could get no closer.

Three players scored in twin figures, led by freshman guard Giordan Watson with 18 points and sophomore forward Sefton Barrett with 17. Sophomore forward Eddie Spencer added 11.

Northwood was led by guard Graham Mertz, a former Chippewa walk-on, with 14. Ryan Broker added 13 and Eric Gieslow 12 on four threes.

Central Michigan held a slim edge in rebounds, 31-29, and committed 14 less turnovers with 15.

The Chippewas meshed 26-of-55 shots from the field for 47.3 percent to Northwood's 51.2 percent on 21-of-41.

Kevin Nelson, CMU's top returning scorer from last year, sat out of the game for discipline reasons (academics).
