Smith Named MAC West Offensive Player of the Week

MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University senior quarterback Kent Smith of Toledo (Ohio) Start High School has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Chippewas' 38-37 come-from-behind win at Miami University on Saturday.

Kent Smith completed 26-of-36 passes for 356 yards and two touchdowns, while also running 16 times for a career-high 122 yards and two scores. His 478 yards of offense broke his own school record of 446 set last season at Toledo and is the 10th-best single-game performance in MAC history. Smith completed three passes of at least 50 yards and ran for at least 10 yards on six occasions in the win.

This marks Smith's second career weekly MAC honor. He was named West Division Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 205 yards and a touchdown and running for 72 yards and a score in last season's 24-21 overtime win against Western Michigan.

Smith is the second CMU player in as many weeks to collect a player of the week award. Junior end Daniel Bazuin (McBain, Mich./McBain HS) earned the defensive nod last week after collecting 10 tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles against Indiana on Sept. 2.

Central Michigan (1-1 overall, 1-0 MAC) is on the road again this weekend, visiting Penn State. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
