Strehl and Bazuin Collect MAC West Honors

MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University sophomore Ryan Strehl of Mattawan (Mich.) High School and junior defensive end Daniel Bazuin of McBain (Mich.) High School have been named Mid-American Conference West Division Players of the Week on special teams and defense, respectively, for their performances in the Chippewas' 31-24 overtime win at Ball State Saturday.

Ryan Strehl earns the special teams nod after returning a blocked punt 32 yards for a go-ahead touchdown with 1:51 remaining in the contest. Justin Gardner blocked the punt, which Strehl scooped off the turf and returned down the sideline. Strehl's score and Rick Albreski's point-after put CMU in front, 24-21, for the first time in the contest.

Daniel Bazuin, who shares the weekly defensive honor with Northern Illinois safety Dustin Utschig, recorded 5.5 tackles for loss, including 3.5 sacks, against Ball State. Bazuin, who finished with 11 tackles in the win, now holds CMU career records for tackles for loss (48.5) and sacks (26) and single-season records for tackles for loss (26.5) and sacks (16). His 16 sacks in 2005 also tie the MAC single-season record.

Central Michigan (6-5 overall, 5-3 MAC) posted its first winning record since 1998 this season. The Chippewas' six overall wins and five conference victories are the most since 1998.
