Mitchell Makes His College Choice

Cornerback Mark Mitchell of Tecumseh (Mich.) High School made his college choice this past weekend, choosing between his two finalists, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan. Which school won the recruiting battle and what were the determining factors?

Cornerback Mark Mitchell (6-0, 180) of Tecumseh (Mich.) High School completed official visits to Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan on consecutive weekends this month.

Saturday, Mitchell made a verbal commitment to EMU over CMU in a decision he said was not easy.

"It was a very hard choice," Mitchell said. "I feel both programs are on a similar level, but I felt more comfortable at Eastern Michigan and it's closer to home."

Ypsilanti, the home of EMU, is just a half hour from Tecumseh, but Mitchell also cited his close relationship with the Eagle coaches, particularly assistant Joe Palka, who'd been recruiting him since last June.

"I was fortunate that he (coach Palka) was my primary recruiter and he'll be my position coach too," Mitchell said. "The facilities and campus at CMU are really nice and the coaches are great, but the relationship I was able to build with coach Palka was a little stronger."

Mitchell said EMU recruited him to be a cornerback and has told him they'd like him to play as a true freshman rather than redshirt his first year.
