Simons Narrows Field of Suitors

Small forward Ben Simons of Cadillac (Mich.) High School is a priority 2009 recruit for the Central Michigan University men's basketball program. As Simons gets closer to making his college choice, he must decide among a handful of Division I schools from across the nation. He provided Chippewas Insider with an update on his recruitment.

Small forward Ben Simons of Cadillac (Mich.) High School said he is getting closer to making his college choice.

The 6-foot-8 standout said he currently has scholarship offers from Providence, Utah and Baylor, in addition to Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Drake and Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Simons said he is in the process of whittling down that list.

"I'm just starting to narrow down my list," said Simons, who is now almost fully recoverd from a sprained MCL he suffered in July playing AAU ball. "Central (Michigan) and Western (Michigan) are both still in the mix. I'm going to take some official visits in September and probably make a decision in October."

Simons said he will most likely use unofficial visits for local favorites CMU and WMU.

"It seems like I go to Mount Pleasant (Mich.) about three times a week, so I'm very familiar with CMU already," said Simons, who still has a lot of family in Mt. Pleasant.

Simons said CMU holds great appeal for him with his family ties and close proximity to home, but there is also the allure of playing for Providence in the Big East Conference or Baylor in the Big 12.

"I have a tough decision to make," Simons said. "Do I want to play that far away from home where I won't see my family as often? That's something I might regret two years down the road."
