Chris Kaman, in his seventh season with the Los Angeles Clippers, was selected by NBA commissioner David Stern to replace guard Brandon Roy (Portland Trail Blazers) who is suffering from an injury.
The 7-0 center becomes the third Chippewa to be named an NBA All-Star, joining three-time selections Dan Roundfield and Dan Majerle. Seven other Mid-American Conference players have been tabbed in the past.
Kaman is the top-scoring center in the NBA with 20.2 points per game and his scoring average ranks 16th among all players. He also ranks 18th overall in blocked shots (1.39 bpg) and 19th in rebounds (9.0 rpg).
Twice this season Kaman was named NBA Western Conference Player of the Week. He is one of only three players in the league averaging at least 20 points and nine rebounds per game, joining Toronto's Chris Bosh and Memphis' Zach Randolph.
The former MAC Player of the Year leads the Clippers in scoring this season while notching 28 games of 20-plus points, including 18 of the last 22 games. He has 19 double-doubles on the year.
Kaman helped lead Central Michigan to Mid-American Conference titles in 2001 and 2003. The 2003 squad set a school record with 25 wins and won an NCAA Tournament first-round game over Creighton. Following his junior season, Kaman entered the 2003 NBA Draft where he was selected sixth overall by the Clippers.
The 59th Annual NBA All-Star Game is being played in the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington and will feature a crowd that could break the all-time NBA attendance record. The game is being televised live on TNT with coverage beginning at 7 p.m. and tipoff set for 8 p.m.
