Ohio 2013 QB Earns First Offer

It didn't take long for Malik Zaire to earn his first scholarship offer. Having already camped at Kentucky and Wisconsin, Zaire headed to Cincinnati and walked away holding a verbal offer from the Bearcats.

One of the top quarterbacks in the Class of 2013 is Kettering (Ohio) Alter High School signal caller Malik Zaire. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Zaire, spoke with Bearcat Insider about his first offer.

"Yea I went down and worked out a little bit at Cincinnati today. Coach (Butch) Jones gave me an offer after camp was over."

While surprised by the early offer, the Bearcats head coach expressed to Malik what he is looking for in players he offers.

"After it was over I went to Coach Jones office and spoke with him. He told me they were offering me to play quarterback for them and that his program is about getting players that want to play for National Championships. We had a long talk about a lot of things."

While the Bearcats are first on his list, Malik has already seen some positive talk from other coaches and has plans to camp at a couple of more schools in the next few weeks.

"I just got back from Wisconsin for a one-day camp and the coaches up there really like me and they would like to see me back. Then I'm going to Ohio State for their 3-day camp and then to Michigan State in July."

How surprised is Malik about getting his first offer?

"I knew I was getting a lot of looks my way but did not expect one this early. So I'm real excited and know that it opens the door for many more to come. I know I've got to keep working hard."

During his meeting with the Bearcats head coach, Malik walked away with some positive feelings about the Bearcats head man.

"I thought he was a real goal oriented guy who is genuine and who wants to recruit players that will win national championships and compete. I feel I can fit in there."

Coach Jones stressed the importance of the school that is first to offer you.

"He said the first offer is always the college that likes you and shows you a lot of love. He said there is going to be a lot of stuff that will come my way because it is so early, but he wants me to know he wants me to be there after high school."
