Gearing Talks Bearcats Offer

Local quarterback prospect Austin Gearing talks about his Cincinnati offer not as a quarterback, but a tight end. watched Austin Gearing of Middletown (OH) Fenwick High School in early April at the Combine. While we liked what Gearing had done as a high school quarterback we were not sure he projected there at the college level. However, with a 4.47 Pro-Shuttle, 4.75 Forty and 7.22 L-Cone, we felt someone could look at him as a tight end. Cincinnati did just that after getting the local standout back for a second day of camp this past Saturday.

"I went to Cincinnati's camp on the 12-th as a quarterback and did very well athletically. However, my throws were not consistent according to Coach (Mike) Bajakian. He asked if I would come back as a tight end / wide receiver at another camp. So I went back on Saturday and just worked out with the tight ends. I then did some work with the tight end and receivers coach as Coach (Butch) Jones was watching me and giving me tips."

The return trip helped Gearing earn his first scholarship offer.

"Afterwards, Coach Jones said he loved me and later that day I got on Facebook and Coach Jones had sent me a message saying they all loved me so much and knew it was not the position I wanted to play, but that I had an offer as a tight end."

For Gearing the offer was great news as he's looking to play football at the college level.

"I'm alright playing tight end; I just want to play college football."

While the Bearcats have a nice advantage at this time, future camps could also open a few doors.

"I'm already registered for the Ohio State camp on the 25-th. I might be going to Bowling Green on Tuesday, but I'm not sure right now." will continue to check back with Austin and his interest in the Bearcats.
