Thomas ruled ineligible

Incoming freshman among six NIA Prep athletes declared ineligible.

Cincinnati – It doesn't look like Shaquille Thomas will be suiting up for the Bearcats this season as the NCAA has declared him ineligible along with five other NIA Prep athletes, according to Alif Muhammad of NIA Prep.

The six players must appeal the decision in order to be eligible for the upcoming season. After arriving earlier this summer with the rest of the incoming freshmen, Thomas was sent back home to New Jersey to "complete a couple online course".

Ryan Rhoomes (Texas Christian), Kelvin Amayo (Towson) and Ibn Muhammad (Fairleigh Dickinson) are the other three basketball players affected by the NCAA decision.

When the NCAA started looking at prep schools that they termed "diploma mills" about five years ago, NIA Prep was deemed a legitimate school. It is registered with the New Jersey Department of Education and is also a member of the College Board.

Ranked 92nd in the country coming out of NIA Prep, Thomas averaged 28 points and eight assists playing for the Newark, NJ prep school. In nine games playing for SLATS in the Deveroes Summer League, Thomas averaged 12.5 points and 4.2 assists.
