Bearcats Win At Home For First Conference Win

Cincinnati wins another home game and improve to 4-2 on the year after a 38-20 win against Temple.

The Cincinnati Bearcats have always played well in the friendly confines of Nippert and nothing changed tonight as the home team defeated the Temple Owls 38-20 to improve their record to 4-2 on the season. Most importantly, Cincinnati was able to get its first win as a member of the American Athletic Conference.

The Bearcats, who improved to 1-1 in conference play, were able to get things rolling early in the first quarter as the defense forced a three and out to start the game. Cincinnati's offense then drove 79 yards down the field and scored on a 24 yard touchdown run by Bearcat Junior Tion Green. That score gave Cincinnati a 7-0 lead with 9:56 left to play in the first quarter.

"He's going to be a great running back for us," said Tuberville of Green. "He knows how to run between his pads and get extra yards."

However, that did not last long as Temple capped off an 80 yard drive with a 35 yard touchdown pass from P.J Walker to Jalen Fitzpatrick to knot things up at 7. The Owls responded well and on the ensuing kickoff, Bearcat senior Ralph David Abernathy fumbled the return and the ball was recovered by Temple on the Bearcats 24 yard line.

Temple capitalized on good field position and scored on a 1 yard touchdown run by Temple running back Zaire Williams. The extra point was missed but not before the Owls took a 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

That lead would not last long as the Bearcats were able to respond quickly and score on a 25 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brendon Kay to fellow senior Anthony McClung to give UC a 14-13 lead.

Later in the quarter, the defense made a big play when freshman safety Zach Edwards intercepted Temple's P.J. Walker and returned the pick into red zone territory. From their the Bearcats punched it in on a 4 yard run from Key which extended the lead to 21-13. Both teams would swap touchdowns to end the quarter and at halftime Cincinnati had a 28-20 lead.

After the intermission, The Bearcats received the ball to start the half in hopes of extending the lead even more and taking control of the game. They did just that when Cincinnati took their first possession of the second half for six on another Kay to McClung connection. That score made it 35-20 and a Tony Miliano field goal later on in the quarter stretched the Bearcat lead to 18 after three.

"It was good that both sides played well and fed off each other," said Tuberville. "all together it was a good effort but their's always room for improvement."

That 18 point lead would hold until the end of the game as the Bearcats offense in the fourth quarter was brought to you by Louis Trauth Dairy as they milked the clock to secure the victory. It was a great win for UC as they improve to 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. The Bearcats like playing at home and will do it again next Saturday for their homecoming game against UCONN.
