"I've very excited about being a Bearcat," said Ashworth. "It will mean a lot to sign with them as Coach Prunty has been recruiting me for a couple of months now and I've had a chance to learn how great of a guy he is.
"Coach Prunty and Coach (Tommy) Tuberville do make a great team and I look forward to being coached by both of them."
While Ashworth's name was a new one to Bearcat fans, he's no stranger to the UC campus.
"I visited campus a few months ago," he said. "I really liked it and the whole city as it's a cool place to be. It's a beautiful city by the river and you have the Reds right besides the Bengals. So I just liked everything about it. So it was the city, the campus and the coaches that made everything combined just perfect."
While the Bearcats may have been his only offer, he was hearing from several programs showing high interest.
"I was hearing from Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Duke, Wake Forest and some Division Two schools," he explained. "However, I decided I didn't want to wait until my senior year to decide and felt that Cincinnati was right for me.
"My parents backed me up on it and I think it's were I'm supposed to be. So I'm just glad to make that decision and I'm very excited."
While some might have stressed about the lack of early interest, Ashworth was confident in his abilities and didn't want the recruiting process to weight on his mind.
"In a way it does weight on your mind," he said. "But I made a decision that I wasn't going to stress about the recruiting process and just enjoy it. It was nice talking with all these college coaches from different places and the experience that comes from it. The recruiting process was very exciting, but I'm glad I made my decision and I'm glad it's out of the way so I can enjoy my senior year."
