There was no question the surprise Cincinnati's first scrimmage of the preseason was the Bearcats defensive effort and execution during the early part of the scrimmage. New Co-Defensive Coordinator Steve Clinkscale has promised fans will see a much improved defensive unit playing together with each member of the Bearcats coaching staff working as one. The results on the field Saturday in Nippert Stadium should have fans excited about the upcoming season.
Improvement along the defensive line and at linebacker helped the Bearcats defense early in the scrimmage and while later in the day there would be some breakdowns, early results were a major improvement from a year ago.
Bearcat Insider spoke with Clickscale following the scrimmage to get his thoughts.
STEVE CLINKSCALE FILE
For co-defensive coordinator Steve Clinkscale coming to Cincinnati brought him back to his home state to continue working on a college coaching career that has seen stops at Ashland, Western Carolina, Toledo and Illinois before the Bearcats.
A longtime coach in the secondary, Clinkscale joined Tommy Tuberville in his first season after working for a season at Illinois where he also coached cornerbacks. This past off season Tuberville named the Youngstown, Ohio native as his new co-defensive coordinator as he'll join Robert Prunty in sharing the title. But it has been easy to see Clinkscale is putting his stamp on the Bearcats defense in the early parts of the 2015 season.
Coach Clinkscale is married and the couple have four sons including a set of twins.
