Bearcat Insider takes it’s first look at the BYU Cougars, Cincinnati’s next opponent Friday night on the road at LaVell Edwards Stadium

The Cincinnati Bearcats will be greeted by one of the few Independent football teams BYU Cougars at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Bearcat Insider takes our first look at the Cougars as the Bearcats look to continue their winning fortunes on the road.

Today we are highlighting the BYU Cougars offense and defense to see what the Cincinnati Bearcats are getting into on Friday night.

Led by offensive coordinator Robert Anae and during the first six games the Cougars are averaging 27.7 points per game despite being shut out by Michigan a few weeks ago in Ann Arbor.

The offense is led by quarterback Tanner Mangum who is filling in for injured Taysom Hill (out for the season). Mangum is a solid quarterback, but seems prone to the mistake as he already has 5 interceptions to go with his 9 touchdowns. He has thrown for 1,416 yards in his six games.

The backfield is headed by running back Alegmon Brown who has 252 yards on 50 carries and 3 touchdowns. Brown has taken over for Adam Hine who has been saddled by injuries.

The Cougars have five receivers with at least 15 receptions this season. The top two targets the Bearcats have to look out for are Mitch Mathews and Mitch Juergens. The Mitch connection has combined for 56 catches, 680 yards and 8 touchdowns. Mathews has 33 of the catches, but Juregens seems to be the more explosive receiver averaging 13.1 yards per reception.

The defense is led by the defensive coordinator Nick Howell and during the first six games has yielded 26.3 points per game. This defense is led by safety Michael Wadsworth now has a team leading 44 tackles and 3 passes defensed.

For the Cougars having your safety as the leading tackler explains why they give up so many points on a weekly basis and Bearcat fans should find some comfort in finding out these facts.

We will go over special teams this week also.

Note: Mitch Juergens plays a HBack and his backup is Trey Dye.
