J.T. Smith is giving out defensive game balls for Cincinnati against BYU

Here at BCI we are going to start a weekly tradition to give out game balls to the top performers on defense no matter if the outcome of the game. Check below to see which Bearcats received an award on defense.

The Bearcats went out west to Provo, Utah and caught a beat down by the hands of the BYU Cougars. Now the game wasn’t a total beat down, but the second half was rough the Bearcats loss a game where they entered the fourth quarter up 24-17, and no I didn’t mistype the Bearcats loss 38-24.

The defense didn’t have a sharp game, but in the second half I will give them a slight break because the offense had a lot of short drives that didn’t amount to any rest for the defense in high altitude.

Even in defeat I’m here to give out a few defensive game balls.

Game ball number one: Tyrell Gilbert, safety – 8 tackles (1 tackle for loss) and 1 pass defensed

Gilbert was flying around all night and out of the secondary he was the one who seemed to never be out of position. He had a touchdown saving play in the first half that was amazing that he was even able to make the play. The redshirt freshman has been turning heads since being inserted in the lineup after an Andre Jones injury. On a night where the defense in the second half didn’t look great he was one that stood out.

Game ball number two: Kevin Brown, linebacker- 4 tackles and 1 interception

Now Brown’s stats don’t jump at you, but like Tion Green throwing a touchdown on Friday, Kevin making an interception puts him on this list this week. The Bearcats have 5 takeaways in six games this season and that is counting the huge pick by the linebacker on Friday. Besides that play Brown didn’t do much to stand out, but you have to give the kid credit for making a huge play when others haven’t done a good job at taking the ball away from opponents this season.
