J.T.’s defensive game balls

BCI is back giving out defensive game balls for the Bearcats latest performance against the Connecticut Huskies on homecoming weekend. Let’s check out who the top performers were this week.

The Bearcats defense stepped up as a whole during homecoming weekend only allowing 266 total yards against the Huskies. The rainy weather was didn’t suit the Huskies well at all after thinking the bad weather would be a plus for their offense. The 37-13 victory was huge for the team, but especially the defense.

Let’s see who earned a game ball this week.

Game ball number one: Zach Edwards, safety- 8 tackles (.5 tackle for loss), 1 pass defensed and 1 forced fumble

Edwards came out from the jump flying around like his hair was on fire. He is one of the most consistent players on the team, but on Saturday he caused a fumble for the turnover deprived defense and helped set a tone that the whole defense followed.

Game ball number two: Tyrell Gilbert, safety- 3 tackles and 1 interception

Gilbert earns a game ball for the second week in a row as he too caused a turnover as he picked off Bryant Shirreffs. He only had 3 tackles, but that’s a good thing for the defense overall. He made another big play on defense and every week he seems to be getting better and better. The improved play is a great sign for the young defense.

Game ball number three: Landon Brazile, defensive end- 3 tackles (1 tackle for loss)

Brazile a redshirt freshman earned his first start on Saturday and he rewarded Tommy Tuberville and Steve Clinkscale with great play. He had one tackle for loss that stood out to me and made me follow what he was doing for a whole quarter and even though he only had 3 tackles he seemed to be around the ball all day. Brazile is another young guy that is stepping up in a big way for the Bearcats defense so hopefully he can keep building on his big day.
