With an 8.7 yards per carry average, sophomore running back Michael Boone continues to show why he’s a key component to the Bearcats offensive success. Bearcat Insider spoke with Boone this week about UCF and more.
BEARCAT INSIDER: The offense put up 37-points Saturday, what do you feel were the keys to that kind of dominating performance?
Michael Boone: Well, last week we got in the film room and saw they (UConn) were a heavy blitz team. But on the back in the secondary they struggled so our receivers had a good day in the passing game and it opened up the run game for myself, Tion (Green) and Hosey (Williams) and we just executed like we did in practice all week.
BEARCAT INSIDER: Last season you led this team in rushing. We all know you have big play ability so after missing a few games with the injury, do you feel like now you are getting your explosiveness back?
Michael Boone: Oh yeah man, definitely, the O-Line has been opening holes to run thru and getting me to the second level to put us in position to move the chains. So I give all the credit to the big boys up front.
BEARCAT INSIDER: This week you’re going up against a UCF team that is winless and lost their head coach who resigned Sunday. You know they will be motivated to get that first win. What kind of things will help you guys keep that edge or be motivated to get a win this week?
Michael Boone: We just got to make a statement early on and not let them gain any confidence or let get them get going to feel like they have a chance. If we take care of business early we should be good the rest of the game.
BEARCAT INSIDER: For you personally Mike, what are some things you want to do to expand your game to help this team win football games the rest of the season?
Michael Boone: I feel like I can be a better pass blocker. Coach (Eddie) Gran puts a big emphasis on protecting the quarterback, so if I protect the quarterback I will be a better running back and more importantly a better team player.
BEARCAT INSIDER: What are the realistic expectations for this team the rest of the season?
Michael Boone: We want to win out. We're finally getting rolling, getting guys healthy at the right time and we know what our objective is. We just have to execute and we will win football games.
