BCI takes a look at the Bearcats next opponent the East Carolina Pirates

The Bearcats final regular season game will be on the road against the East Carolina Pirates. Can the Bearcats keep ECU from getting their sixth win of the season? Can the Bearcats win their second game on the road this season?

The Bearcats are bowl eligible because they are out of contention for the American Athletic Conference East division their last regular season game will be against East Carolina Saturday afternoon. If the guys from Clifton can win on Saturday it would keep ECU from becoming bowl eligible so this game is huge if the Bearcats believe it or not. For a season that has been disappointing to say the least if they can prevent a major football rival from becoming bowl eligible that would be a nice feather in coach Tuberville’s cap.

We are going to preview the East Carolina Panthers offense and defense today.

The Pirates are led by offensive coordinator Dave Nichol. Nichol currently has his unit averaging 28.5 points per game.

The main quarterback is lefty Blake Kemp, who is a junior college transfer. Kemp has thrown for 2,343 yards, 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on 69.8% completions. He doesn’t have the strongest arm, but likes to get the ball out fast. They also like to play James Summers at quarterback for a change of pace. He is the running threat as he has amassed 445 yards and 8 touchdowns on the ground. A few early injuries have allowed these two opportunities this year.

Chris Hairston is the main running back as he has run for 738 yards on 4.7 yards per carry and 8 touchdowns.

Isaiah Jones is the primary target at receiver as he is 25 yards away from having a thousand yard season. Jones has 86 catches for 975 yards and 5 touchdowns.

The Pirates are led by defensive coordinator Rick Smith. Smith (not related) currently has his unit giving up 26.6 points per game.

The heart and soul of this solid defense is inside linebacker Zeek Bigger. Bigger leads the team with 89 tackles (4.5 tackles for loss) and 1.5 sacks.

Their sack master is outside linebacker Montese Overton. Overton has 7.5 sacks and 62 tackles (10.0 tackles for loss).

As a whole this unit has forced 15 takeaways this season (8 fumbles and 7 interceptions).

Note: The Pirates start three receivers, so the fullback position was filled with the Pirates third receiver.
