Andrew Gantz makes game winning field goal to push UC past ECU 19-16

The Cincinnati Bearcats were able to keep the East Carolina Pirates from becoming bowl eligible on the foot of Andrew Gantz. The Bearcats secured their second win on the road of the season to finish the season 7-5.

It was déjà vu for the East Carolina Pirates against the Cincinnati Bearcats. ECU probably will have nightmares about kicker Andrew Gantz for years as last year he hit a game winning field goal at Paul Brown Stadium 54-46. During today’s game Gantz hit a 42 yard field goal to push the knife into the Pirates hearts 19-16. The kick this year will keep the Pirates from being bowl eligible.

Honestly this game was a defensive battle for the most part as nobody reached 20 points today. The Bearcats defense was able to hold the Pirates to a total of 68 yards rushing which is a good feat for this unit. Blake Kemp threw for 315 yards and a touchdown, but it wasn’t enough to counter the Bearcats more balanced attack.

Gunner Kiel threw for 270 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. The star of the day was receiver Shaq Washington who had 15 catches for 124 yards and 1 touchdown. The Pirates receiver Isaiah Jones had 12 catches and 124 yards, but it couldn’t match the great effort by Washington on Saturday afternoon.

Because of what this game meant to the Pirates I expected the Bearcats to in a back street brawl and that’s what this game was. This was a big bounce back from the thrashing they experienced on the road last week in South Florida.

The Bearcats are now 7-5 overall and 4-4 in the American Athletic Conference. They should be placed in a bowl within the next few weeks.

Where will the Bearcats be bowling?
