We talked about offense and defense for the Aztecs last week so this week we had to highlight the head coach and special teams.
The Aztecs are led by head coach John “Rocky” Long. Long has been the head coach/defensive coordinator the last five years. He has led the Aztecs to a 10-3 overall and 8-0 in the Mountain West Conference this season. His overall record with the Aztecs is 42-23 and 30-9 in conference. He has a 1-3 bowl record since taking over in 2011.
Long also had an 11 year run as the head man at New Mexico where he was 1-4 in bowl games.
The Aztecs have a solid special teams unit and they are led by special teams coach Bobby Hauck.
Kicker Donny Hageman is very good he is 17 of 22 field goal attempts this season and has a long of 54 yards.
Punter Tanner Blain has been very solid also he averages 40.6 yards per punt and has a long of 63 yards. Blain has had 23 punts land inside the 20 this season.
Kick returner Rashaad Penny has been special this year for the special teams unit. Penny has had 23 returns for 704 yards and 2 touchdowns. He averages 30.6 yards per return and has a long of 100 yards. The Bearcats will have to pay special attention to him in the kicking game.
Punt returners Lloyd Mills and Damontae Kazee are both threats in the punt return game. Mills has 15 returns for 143 yards and a long of 57 yards. Kazee has 5 returns for 70 yards and 1 touchdown. Kazee’s long is 66 yards.
To be honest the Bearcats need to be smart during all phases of special teams because it seems the Aztecs are solid across the board on that unit of the ball.
