J.T. Smith talks about the importance of ECU game Saturday for the Bearcats

Today I was able to sit down with the Scout studio to go over the importance of the Cincinnati Bearcats game this Saturday against the East Carolina Pirates.

With three games left in the regular season the Bearcats are currently on the right side of the bubble for NCAA tournament hopes. Last week they went 1-1 losing in overtime to Tulsa on the road and completing the season sweep of rival Connecticut at home. Now sitting at 20-8 overall and 10-5 in the AAC, they are fourth in conference which is a strong place to be and with a solid finish all should be well in Clifton.

On Saturday they will go on the road to face ECU at Noon (the game will be televised on the ESPNU). ECU was at Fifth Third Arena February 13th and it resulted in a 75-60 Bearcats win. The Pirates are currently at the bottom of the AAC standings at 3-12 and 11-17 overall so to be fair this is a game UC can’t afford to lose with selection Sunday right around the corner. They can’t look past the Pirates to Houston and SMU because a loss to Houston or SMU is more justifiable than a loss to ECU at this point in the season. No shot at ECU, but their back is against the wall and they can’t have any more silly loses.

Last year ECU beat UC February 1, 2015 50-46 in Greenville, North Carolina. Can Saturday be a repeat? It cannot, but we will see on Saturday.

Note: Senior guard Farad Cobb (MCL Sprain) and senior forward Shaq Thomas (groin) are questionable this weekend. Thomas has been practicing, but Cobb hasn’t so as of now I would say Thomas has more a chance to play and Cobb may be out. Keep an eye out on our message boards to keep up with the latest information about their injuries.
