BCI takes a look at the Bearcats secondary

Bearcat Insider takes a look at the Cincinnati Bearcats secondary. The secondary was ravaged with injury last season, but it allowed a lot of underclassmen to play. Will they be able to take advantage? Take a peek at the guys that will be manning the back end.

We are going to use the same post to include the whole secondary. We are highlighting the cornerbacks and safeties with one swing. This group has a lot of talent and if they can stay discipline and healthy it will be a vastly improved unit this season.

This group loses Adrian Witty whose loss last year hurt this group a lot and Leviticus Payne who was the sudo corner slash linebacker.

Junior Grant Coleman is back after an injury plagued season and during spring he looked like a guy who was going to take the next step. Coleman has played a lot during his previous two years, so I expect a solid year from him.

Fellow junior Linden Stephens plans to bounce back from an injury filled season just like Coleman. Stephens has played a lot also during his first two years and with his size should be able to have a strong season.

Sophomores Alex Thomas and JJ Pinckney will get first dibs at extra snaps both guys played a lot because of the injuries in the secondary and at times looked like they belonged. Thomas stands at 6’1” and Pinckney at 6’3”, who doesn’t love tall corners which UC has an abundance of! Both will play better with the experience they gained last season and this year they won’t have the same pressures.

Also in the mix is 6’2” JuCo guy Davin Pierce, on the website they have him listed as a safety, but he is known as a corner so be on the lookout for him.

Redshirt freshman Christian Angulo will be in the mix after a strong spring, he also stands at 6’2”. Angulo is a guy to watch if any of the guys previously mentioned falter.

Rounding up the group is Desmond Johnson, Chris Murphy, freshman Marquis Smith and Bryce Beard.

The safeties are led by senior Zach Edwards, whether it’s wearing 22 or 4, he has been a playmaker for this secondary. Edwards was AAC honorable mention last season and he expects to have a better senior season.

Edwards will be flanked by either Carter Jacobs or Tyrell Gilbert. Gilbert played a lot last season as a redshirt freshman and displayed a lot of range and playmaking ability. He is a guy to keep an eye on. Jacobs played solid last season in spot duty, the junior will look to get more snaps this fall.

Mike Tyson is a safety slash linebacker for this team so you never know where he might line up, he is hyper aggressive hopefully he slows down and limits his pass interference penalties this season. Iron Mike is the Leviticus Payne of this team.

Malik Clements looked like he belonged on the field at times last season in spot duty, keep an eye on the sophomore.

Rounding out the group is Austin Sullins, Kevin Smith, Anthony Legend, Sheldon Doss and freshman Perry Young.

Barring major injury this group will be vastly improved, mark my words.
