We finally got to the special teams unit, sorry for the delay. This will be a strong unit barring any major injury. Bearcat Insider wanted to take a look at a group people take for granted, but in college it's a plus to have a strong unit.
Junior kicker Andrew Gantz has been a staple since his arrival a few years ago. Gantz was injured during preseason camp, but is expected to be ready for game one. Remember the name Josh Pasley if Gantz has to miss any time as he was seen at Camp Higher Ground making a lot of field goals. Gantz made 21 of 27 attempts last season and multiple 50 plus yard attempts. He is one of the best kickers in the country and if healthy he should prove that during his junior season.
Junior punter Sam Geraci will hold down the fort with punting duties. Geraci was injured during preseason camp, but is expected to be ready for the opener. He averaged 46.3 yards per punt last season on 44 attempts, 21 landed inside the 20 and 17 of them were 50 yards are longer. To say the least the Cincinnati native is a strong part of this special teams unit.
Kick and Punt Return
The kickoff and punt return game will look a lot different with Shaq Washington, Johnny Holton and Chris Moore. So far I’ve seen Juco transfer Devin Gray field punts, but I’m hearing that Mike Boone may be the guy when the season starts. Boone may be tapped to be the main kick returner also. Something he did a few times last season so that won’t be foreign. This is something we will get more closure on when the season actually starts September 1st.
Overall, the kicking and punting game is strong are main question marks will be in the return game, but the Bearcats have the athletes where I’m personally not worried.
