J.T. Smith of Bearcat Insider is giving out defensive game balls for the UT Martin win

It is that time of year again Bearcat fans, if you haven’t checked out this segment before make sure you stay locked in this season to Bearcat Insider. BCI is giving out defensive game balls to a few players for their performance against UT Martin. Check out who received game balls.

The Cincinnati Bearcats defeated the UT Martin Skyhawks 28-7 at Nippert Stadium on Thursday. It wasn’t a pretty game, but Cincinnati got the win so at the end that’s all that matters. The defensive unit gave up 323 yards total, but created three turnovers (2 interceptions (1 touchdown) and a fumble recovering) something this team talked about all off season. Bearcat Insider is going to reward a few players who had nice games on Thursday.

Game ball number one: Eric Wilson, linebacker- 15 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 tackles for loss and 1 pass breaku

Wilson was everywhere for the Bearcats defense on Thursday. He recorded his first college career sack and helped the defense settle down after a slow start. If Wilson plays like this all season this won’t be the last time we are handing him a game ball.

Game ball number two: Tyrell Gilbert, safety- 9 tackles, 1 interception (1 touchdown) and 1 pass breakup

Gilbert had a huge pick six for 58 yards. It was just great seeing the defense having a big play that resulted in points.  He did get caught with pass interference early in the game, but throughout the game he looked that much better in coverage. I like how Gilbert flies around and hopefully he can do this all season.

Game ball number three: Zach Edwards, safety- 12 tackles and 1 pass breakup

Edwards is the senior leader on the back end of the defense and when he starting laying wood on Skyhawks players it seemed the whole game changed on the defensive side of the ball. He had three huge tackles that just made everybody take notice. I’m pretty sure we will be giving Edwards game balls all season.

Game ball number four: Kimoni Fitz, defensive end- 4 tackles, 1 sack, 1.5 tackles for loss and 1 quarterback hurry

It was great just seeing somebody from the Bearcats defensive line get to the quarterback. Fitz started Thursday and he made a few flash plays that Bearcats fans will welcome.
