First Bearcat Insider gave nickel back Mike Tyson a game ball, then Tre gave him a spotlight, then the American Athletic Conference gave him Honor Roll (he was robbed of defensive player of the week) and now he has earned honorable mention for the Jim Thorpe Award Player of the Week Award.
Tyson balled out against Purdue and the masses are recognizing him for his efforts.
University of Cincinnati nickel back Mike Tyson (Norfolk, Va./Hargrave Military Academy) was an honorable mention selection for the Jim Thorpe Award Player of the Week Award, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame Announced Wednesday.
Tyson registered three interceptions in Cincinnati 38-20 road win against Purdue on Sept. 10, tying an American Athletic Conference single-game record. He earned a spot on the league’s weekly honor roll.
The third player in AAC history to have three picks in a game, Tyson thwarted Purdue’s first drive of the game, intercepting Boilermakers QB David Blough at the UC 15-yard line. Tyson’s second pick came in the Bearcats’ end zone with 1:30 left in the second quarter. He completed the trio with his third interception with 4:56 left in the game.
The interceptions were Tyson’s first of the season. He is tied for the 2016 NCAA FBS interceptions lead and now has five for his career.
It was the seventh time in UC history a player had three or more interceptions in a game and the first since DeAngelo Smith had three picks against Southern Miss in the 2007 PapaJohns.com Bowl.
