Bearcats knock off Pirates 31-19 in front of homecoming crowd at Nippert Stadium

The Cincinnati Bearcats were seeking out their first win in the American Athletic Conference, Saturday night against the East Carolina Pirates. The Bearcats inserted senior quarterback Gunner Kiel to give them a shot in the arm and it seemed to work.

Saturday night the Bearcats were seeking their first conference win of the season against ECU. Being a night game and homecoming it was excitement in the air.

Earlier in the week it was announced that Gunner Kiel would be the starter at quarterback for the first time this season and he didn’t disappoint for the folks that remembered the gunslinger. In the first half Kiel threw for 191 yards and 2 touchdowns without any turnovers, no I didn’t lie no turnovers that is a welcomed sight for all Bearcats fans. The defense did a good job holding the Pirates to 3 points in the first half. UC outgained the Pirates in total yards 295 to 215.

In the second half the Bearcats had a few busted coverages that allowed Philip Nelson to hit Jimmy Williams for two touchdowns of 28 and 37 yards. The Kiel and Khalil Lewis connection was too much for the Pirates as they hooked up for two big touchdowns in the second half none more important 32 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

They secured their first victory in the American Athletic Conference and currently 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the AAC.

The Bearcats won 31-19 on homecoming weekend.

Game Notes:

Khalil Lewis had a career high in receptions, yards and touchdowns with 11 receptions, 150 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Gunner Kiel threw for 348 yards on 23 of 40 attempts and 4 touchdowns.

Antonio Kinard will miss the first half of the Temple game because of a targeting call in the second half.

Shaq Washington was honored during the game.
