Volleyball's non-traditional season is based on the 21-week schedule the NCAA allots for teams to work with their players. After the 2004-05 season, the Bearcats were left with enough time to fulfill the four-tournament schedule the UC coaching staff has assembled.
With only four returning starters and two new assistant coaches, the Bearcats will look to use the allotted time to help forge a bond between a new rotation of players and coaches.
"Its competition and you always want to win, but if you can win and learn at the same time it is always a good thing," said head coach Reed Sunahara who enters his sixth season as the head man for the Bearcats. "We look to work on a lot of technical stuff and we hope that can carry over to the fall. If we are winning in the spring and not learning anything, and it doesn't help us in the fall then it doesn't matter what we do in the spring."
Of the four returnees from last fall's 22-11 squad in 2005 middle blocker Myanna Hellsten looks to lead the group. Hellsten was a third team selection last year and was the 2003 Conference USA Freshman of the Year. Setter Noel Olson, outside hitter Maria Pongonis and libero Natalie Dossman will all look to return to the starting line-up for spring and upcoming fall seasons.
Along with new players, UC is also proud to welcome Chrissy Smith and Steve Aird to the staff for next season.
The Bearcats opened their Spring Schedule with the IUPUI Tournament in
Indianapolis and the Ohio Tournament in Athens, Ohio
The Bearcats will close out their spring workouts with the Bowling Green Tournament (Bowling Green, Ohio) on March 23, but that will not spell the end of off-season works for the volleyball squad.
Sunahara and UC players, coaches and other top collegiate and high school coaches will serve as staff members for the 2005 University of Cincinnati/Reed Sunahara Volleyball Camps that will run throughout the month of July. The Camps will look to serve as building the skills of the young volleyball players, but will also help UC players and coaches improve their skills and teamwork through teaching.
With four camp sessions, each will cater to varying levels and skill levels and ages.
