MICKENS BRINGS MORE THAN JUST FOOTBALL SKILLS

While Bearcat fans can't wait to see Mike Mickens on the turf at Nippert Stadium, the track at Gettler Stadium is going to see its share of this top future Bearcat athlete.

Bearcat football recruit Mike Mickens is showing why Bearcat coaches were so excited about getting him on campus. Oh, I forgot... I'm not talking about Coach Mark Dantonio and the football staff. While football is his ticket to the University of Cincinnati, track will be another area the Huber Heights Wayne product will be looking to help the Bearcats.

Bearcats track and field coach Bill Schnier was in Dayton at Welcome Stadium to watch several runners who may or may not be part of his growing program. Mickens, who is the defending 300 Hurdles State Champion in Division One, did his part Thursday during the regional meet.

While Mickens made his marks, he wasn't at 100% stressed Wayne Track Coach Mike Fernandez. "Mike was sick all day on Wednesday. He felt like he had the flu and was carrying a high fever. But he's a tough kid and one that knows what it takes to reach the goals he's got set."

While Mickens hasn't qualified for the state meet yet, Saturday will provide the avenue for him to reach it in several events. But Thursday he did the following.

Became a qualifier for Saturday's District Finals.

110M Hurdles - Mickens - #3 in 15.07

300M Hurdles - Mickens - #1 in 38.91

400M Relay - Wayne - #4 in 43.12

In talking with Mike after he finished his events he had the following comments. "This was hard with the way I'm feeling. But it's time to go to work and get the job done. I'll be ready to go by Saturday."

While Mickens didn't have his best day, he felt he would be ready by Saturday to get the job done. In talking with Coach Schnier, you could see how happy he was about getting such a great athlete into his program.
