I could hear the excitement in Zach Meagher's voice as I spoke to him Sunday afternoon about his college recruitment. Zach has recently been offered a scholarship by the University of Cincinnati, but Coach Dantonio and his staff will have stiff competition in landing this 6' 5" 250 pound tight end with a 4.7 forty-yard dash time.
Meagher might be considered a late bloomer since he garnered only all conference honors as a junior last season for Glen Este High School, but he's definitely a good catch for any school wanting a true student athlete. Zach has a 3.98 GPA and is a member of the Trojans' National Honor Society. These credentials have attracted many scholarship offers including Cincinnati, Duke, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Louisville, Minnesota and Michigan State. Zach wants to major in pre-med in college.
When asked if Cincinnati was a serious contender for his services, Zach explained he is very open-minded about his future. "I really like Coach Dantonio. He's a good guy. I've spoken to Coach Staten and the whole coaching staff are cool guys. I know playing at UC would be nice because it's close to home, and they're going into the Big East, but I'm pretty open at this point. I want to consider everybody. I think I‘d like to take all my visits before making a decision, but I‘m not even sure about that. Depending how this (recruiting) goes, I may want to get it out of the way before the season."
In trying to narrow his growing list of schools, Zach explained that a winning program was very attractive to him. He also spoke about choosing a program that gave him a chance to play as soon as possible. "I realize that redshirting isn't unusual for freshman, and I'm not opposed to it, but I want to get on the field as soon as possible."
Zach was also asked about his preferred college position. Is he a candidate for switching to the offensive line? "I'm a tight end. I don't think I have the body type to be an offensive lineman."
Although Zach said he had no favorites at this time, he did say he had followed Louisville's program quite a bit last year and said if Ohio State offered, they would be definitely be "up there" on his list of schools.
As far as visiting camps this summer, Zach will attend Ohio State "for sure" and probably Purdue as well.
Bearcat Insider will continue to follow this recruiting story with the hopes it ends in Clifton.
